Runaway...With a Free Tee From a New College Start-Up!

By Alexander Ogloza on October 19, 2012

The Runaway Robot is currently holding a contest to see who can come up with the best name for their new robot. If you’re interested in winning a free tee, head on over to this link. Also, everyone who is a fan of the page before the 24th of October will receive an exclusive coupon to The Runaway Robot store! You can view the page here.

Have you ever wanted to change the world for the better? Well a group of students from the University of California, Davis are currently trying to do just that. The Runaway Robot, an apparel company launching this week, aims to raise money for charities and people in need through selling cute, robotic designed apparel.

The company’s formula is quite simple:

1. Create designs using robots (who doesn’t love robots?)

2. Tie these designs to charities or causes that are actively trying to improve the world

3. Release the shirts in order to raise awareness and funds for these sponsored organizations (they donate money directly from each sale).

The Runaway Robot does a majority of releases online through their Facebook page, and they make it a point to keep their prices within a college student’s budget, while at the same time ensuring some of the best quality apparel around.

As far as eligible causes go, they cover all sorts of things, from nature preservation to supplying food and shelter for humans and animals alike, aiding in the fight against cancer, and even providing musical instruments to underprivileged children.

So far the company has raised $1,500 in grants from the Entrepreneurial Fund at UC Davis – a club designed to help students with business idea that aim to make a beneficial impact on the world. They’re having another run of submissions this quarter, so if you go to UC Davis and have a great idea for a business, do yourself a favor and check them out here.

As I mentioned earlier, The Runaway Robot is launching this week, and they’re starting off with a naming contest, deemed Name Our Shi(r)t, which gives their fans a chance to name the Runaway Robot’s mascot for a chance to win a free tee!

The shirt features a currently unnamed robot (hence the contest!) throwing a paper airplane in a loop up and across the chest. On the back, the logo of The Runaway Robot is printed on the bottom. The tag will also have custom wash instructions.

The male/unisex shirts come in two colors, black and deep teal, and are printed on shirts from the brand Canvas. The women’s tee has a “V” , is super soft, and comes from the lady’s counterpart, Bella. The color options for the female tees include dark heather grey and navy.

Prices range from $13-$18 each, and it has been confirmed that there will be an exclusive coupon for everyone who becomes a fan of the page before the 24th of October, so the first tee will probably be on the lower side of the spectrum. The printing is of very high quality so that the breathability of the shirt is maintained in the print. Also, this keeps the design from cracking after going through the drier – something that most plastisols are subject to after only a few cycles.

If you’re interested in submitting a name to try and win a free tee, or if you’re just curious and would like to find out more, you can find their Facebook page here. Also, as their motto goes, you can “Spread the love” and share this with your fellow classmates! Together we can make the world a better place, one tee at a time.
