UIW Theatre Department wins seven ATAC Globe Awards

Alamo Theatre Arts Council
This past Sunday, the Alamo Theatre Arts Council (ATAC) held their 22nd annual ATAC Globe Awards at the Charlene McCombs Empire Theatre. ATAC’s purpose is to recognize and celebrate the work of San Antonio theatre artists; to generate visibility and excitement for locally produced theater; to stimulate and encourage the pursuit of excellence in artistic and production standards; and to educate audiences in discovering the riches of the thespian arts. The awards ceremony recognizes excellence in theatre in the San Antonio community.
To be eligible to recieve an award, the producing theater company must be located in Bexar County; actors, designers, and directors must be residents of San Antonio Metro area; and shows must run for at least two weekends or have five performances in one week. Eligible productions are evaluated each season by a panel of 30 or more volunteer Judges who have completed the ATAC judge training session.
The UIW Theatre Department received the following awards:
Directing (Drama): Mark Stringham, “The Tempest” and Clyde Compton, “Jack and Jill: a Romance”
Lead Actress (Drama): Caity Roberts as Jill in “Jack and Jill: a Romance”
Supporting Actor (Drama): Eric Montoya as Ariel in “The Tempest”
Set Design: Melissa Gaspar, “The Tempest”
Lighting Design: Melissa Gaspar, “The Tempest”
Costume Design: Margaret Mitchell, “The Tempest”
If you were lucky enough to attend performances of either of those shows last year, you will surely agree that all seven awards were extremely well-deserved. Enthusiastic congratulations to all the winners!
If you haven’t attended a show at UIW, there’s still time this semester. Our first production, “The Last Five Years,” a musical by Jason Robert Brown, closed this past weekend. However, work on our second production, Sophocles’ “Antigone,” is well under way. It opens November 9th and will run for two weekends. Shows often fill up fast, so reserve your seats early. UIW students get in free! You may call (210) 829-3800 or email theatre@uiwtx.edu for information on events, ticket availability, and reservations.
