Harmless Eating Utensil? Or Dangerous Weapon…for MURDER?
I opened up the door, quickly whipping my head to the left and then to the right. I stealthily closed the door behind me and flipped my hood up, masking my identity. Spoon in hand and ever watchful, I kept to obscure trails and rarely-used pathways to make my way to class. As I sat in my chair with my back to the wall I remained ever wary until the bell rang at which point I could relax….for the next 50 minutes anyways.
Sounds paranoid, right? You bet I am! But it’s all in harmless fun. Perhaps you’ve heard of a friendly little game before called Assassin? Or maybe by a different name such as Hitman or KAOS? The premise for the game is thus: kill and avoid being killed yourself. Every player is assigned a mark by a referee (non-player), and their mark has their own mark, and so on. How do you accomplish your task? With a plastic spoon of course! A simple stab anywhere on the body will do. After that, THEIR mark becomes YOUR next target.
When we started this game up in my apartment complex, I never expected it to be so intense, but the craziness exploded over night as girls were dragged down three flights of stairs to be stabbed, or cross-campus chases ensued after staking out work spaces. Now, you’d think this would be driving people apart, but we are actually closer together than ever before! Friend requests are flying (through probably to stalk targets) and people are learning all about each other’s class schedules and activities (same reason I’m sure). I’ve had multiple people report getting on Facebook in class for the first time ever just to catch up on the kills, read the wild stories, and watch the videos of the gruesome deaths, often including betrayal.
Basically, college students are very creative at finding inexpensive ways to have fun. If this sounds interesting to you know that there are various ways to play, and you are free to make up your own rules and immunity clauses (we’ve found that safety from holding hands with someone of the opposite sex is rather fun and effective).
