A Dress to Die For, A Cause to Live For

By Lindsay Pelotte on October 13, 2012

The well rounded women of Florida State University’s Gamma Phi chapter of Alpha Phi hosted their 2nd annual Red Dress Gala to raise money to help battle heart disease. All the proceeds raised at the event go towards the Alpha Phi Foundation as well as the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Heart disease is one of the leading causes for death among women. What a better way to help support strong ladies like ourselves!

The event, held in the Tallahassee Civic Center, had the love and support of over 600 guests and numerous donations of gifts and merchandise. Over a dozen baskets full of prizes were auctioned off in a silent auction, and larger items such as autographed helmets and beach vacation getaways were auctioned off in a live auction, along with several more baskets raffled off. There was a wonderful sit down meal, and the night ended in dancing and music from a local band, Spirits of 44, in celebration of raising thousands of dollars all to be donated to the wonderful cause of women’s heart health.

It is amazing to see that so many people are willing to help out a great cause and support an organization dedicated to improving the health of women just like themselves. At Alpha Phi, we pride ourselves in giving back to the community and it was a wonderful experience to be able to share our excitement with friends, family, and the members of Tallahassee. People don’t realize just how much Greek organizations really do to better the lives of people in need and help out a cause. I had come into college looking to join a sorority just for the fun parties and mixers, but after two semesters as a member of Alpha Phi, I have truly gained respect for my organization and the Greek community here at Florida State.

It is an honor to be involved in something that betters the lives of women all over the world. Heart disease in women is a serious issue, and Alpha Phi has created an event that directly aids women who suffer from this life threatening condition. In just one year, the event has grown by almost double the guests and I can only imagine what it will become in the future. I cannot wait until next year to see the outcome of the event and once again put in effort to support an amazing cause.
