Getting Acquainted With UC Davis

By Aqsa Ahmad on October 15, 2012

UC Davis is a pretty big campus and there are many resources available to students that you may have yet to discover. On that note, look no further, for this blog should give you a pretty good idea of what’s out there and what resources are available to you.

For all the students who need help with that really hard and mind blowing math problem, go to the free math tutoring room offered in South Hall. The tutors there are really helpful and friendly. Some of the tutors are students while other are some of the math teachers. The only problem I ever ran into in the free tutoring room was that there were more students and one tutor. It was hard to get all of my questions answered and more than once I would feel pretty frustrated with the lack of response. Other than that it’s a great resource for those of you who need help with a couple of problems. Given that math was not my strongest subject, I probably needed more help than the average person. For the Bio/Chem majors, the Lab and Science’s building offers help with chemistry; there is also chemistry tutoring in South Hall. Although I personally never used this resource myself I have heard from close friends that it is a good resource. For my English majors, there is the Writing Center on the Second Floor of Dutton. You can get any essay, which does not have to be just for English, proofread. Although, on a personal note, I have found this resource to be a hit and miss deal, but do not let that discourage you from visiting it; do go!

Other resources are CAPS and the ARC, which both are a good way to alleviate yourself from the stress of college. I would strongly suggest going to CAPS just for an initial consultation, after all you are paying for these services through tuition, why not? Besides, therapy does not necessarily have to be talking about your “feelings.” You can talk about trouble with picking a major or time management. It’s your space; you can choose how to utilize it.

The ARC is a great resource that you should also utilize because, once again, that is where your tuition money is going! The gym there is completely free, you only have to show your student ID and then viola, you are in. What I personally love about the space is that it divides into two different sections. There is the bottom workout room that you see as you walk towards the locker rooms. Here there is great workout gear for all the body builders. There are also exercise  machines for those of you not interested in muscle building. Then there’s the top floor. It has an indoor track, again some exercise machines, and rooms for all the classes that are offered. On that note the ARC offers exercise and other classes, such as dance class. Some are free while others you have to pay for. You would need to check with the ARC staff before enrolling. Overall, it’s a great place to go workout and burn calories and stress.

When you look at it, UC Davis does have many great resources and I would advise all the students to go and utilize them!
