High Eats: The Best on High

By Joseph Barry on October 9, 2012

I’m glad I got your attention with my title. If you were hoping for a list of the best places to eat while high or drunk, this may not be the article for you. Sorry to disappoint. While several of my fellow Ohio State writers have already written about the best places to eat on campus, I figured I’d write about my personal Top Three favorite places to eat on High Street.

1) Apollo’s Greek Kitchen – If you’re looking for great, authentic greek food, this place is your destination! With a $5 combo that’ll give you a gyro, fries and soft drink of your choice, it’s hard to argue that this doesn’t fit any college budget! It’s also literally right across the street from the Ohio Union, so Apollo’s is about as close to campus as you can get without being on campus. It’s a popular late-night destination, as it stays open until 3:00am Sunday through Thursday and extends its hours to 3:30am on Friday and Saturday.

2) Raising Cane’s – Easily the best chicken fingers on High Street, and arguably in all of Ohio. Their popular combo, the #1, comes with four mouthwatering chicken tenders, crispy crinkle french fries and a drink. An important point for me to make is that Cane’s, along with McDonald’s, is the only restaurant I’ve found so far in Columbus that has sweet tea! Just like Apollo’s, Cane’s also boasts late hours of service. It closes relatively early (at 11:00pm) from Sunday to Wednesday, but stays open until 3:00am Thursday through Saturday.

3) Eddie George’s Grille 27 – This is a little nicer and pricier place than the aforementioned restaurants, so you may want to wait until a parent comes for a visit or a family member offers to treat. I’ve eaten at this restaurant three times since beginning school in August–twice I was treated by my parents, and the third was compliments of my grandma. Eddie’s has an awesome Buffalo Wild Wings-esque feel to it–i.e. about three to four TVs for every sporting event on that night. For a bar, they have a wonderfully diverse menu. Their veggie burgers, for example, are exquisite. Personally, I wouldn’t think a bar would have great veggie burgers, but Eddie’s breaks this stereotype easily. They have a great selection of burgers, salads, sandwiches and flatbreads to choose from, so there is guaranteed to be something that will satisfy your cravings.
