The Benefits of Giving Back
As college students, it is easy to develop a self important attitude. With so much of our life devoted to what we want and who we want to become, it can be hard to remember that we are a small spec on the scale of human life. One way to be reminded of our larger role in life is to volunteer.
Volunteering at an establishment that promotes your personal interests is a great way to meet new people and give back to your community. As someone interested in art and who believes in the promotion of personal expression, I have chosen to freely give my time to the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. At the museum I know my hard work and help is valued by the staff delegate where to put me, but little do they know how much working at the museum means to me.
For instance, on October 5th, the MAH took part in the downtown event First Friday which is a free event on the first friday of each month. It is a separate entity that businesses in downtown Santa Cruz can be a part of to promote local artists and to celebrate art. At the MAH last night, there was a variety of people drawn to the event from families with young children to senior couples. With Sharon Allen and The Dusty Boots performing there were people dancing on the first floor while others enjoyed a tea ceremony on the third floor outdoor patio. The event was in conjunction with the Resource Center for Nonviolence and the arts and crafts provided adults and children the opportunity to make peace flags.
The vibe at the event was one of celebration and happiness. People were overjoyed to dance their Friday night away and also become informed about nonviolence issues. As I stood at the door greeting and good-byeing the attendees, I was thrilled to inform them about other happenings at the museum.
My time at the MAH provides me the ability to promote something I believe in while dancing with kids and chatting with adults. The events are frequented by students as well which contributes to the interconnectedness of the Santa Cruz community and provides me the ability to socialize with friends and meet new ones as well.
Volunteering somewhere you believe in is an excellent way to show yourself just how important your part is in the community. No matter how small your contribution, every establishment appreciates students and in general people who care about their cause and want to give of themselves.
Therefore, I encourage all students to find a way to give back to their community, even if it is your temporary school town. Many places including museums, non profits, wellness centers, and resource centers are looking for bright and eager students to help. Not only will you be helping them and their cause, you will truly be helping yourself.
