Eight Reasons to Appreciate the Autumnal Season
By Elizabeth Arakelian on October 7, 2012
Everyone has a certain time of the year they anticipate all year round: the first Summer day where it is warm enough to swim, the smell of pine trees at Christmas, that moment in Spring when the rain ceases and fresh mornings bring blooming flowers. For me, this time of year is Autumn and here is why:
- The colors – The autumnal season brings a tangible change in the trees that evolve from summer leafy greens to vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds. This pivotal moment ought to be treasured because the next phase leaves our beloved saplings bare and naked.
- The weather – Rare rain and chill beckon winter during Fall but the season is still filled with a few warm days reminiscent of summer. It is in a tug-of-war, being pulled between summer’s fiery temper and winter’s icy attitude. But Autumn is a constant friend, not as temperamental as its sister season spring, and provides days where walking outdoors in a sweater is all you really need.
- The leaves – As a child it is fun to rake fallen leaves into a pile and jump in, but as you get older, your eyes do most of the work scouring for the crunchiest leave to step on. Those few leaf-friendly days ought to be cherished before they are swept away leaving bare trees and empty streets.
- The holidays – Autumn is a comfortable segue into the chaotic christmas season. With no gifts required, fall holidays are fun filled. Halloween brings candy corn and trick-or-treating while Thanksgiving boasts of family time around the turkey. All of these traditions enjoyed before the ominous black friday hits.
- The smell – No one can deny that distinct fall smell. The one that reminds you of halloween nights as a child and makes you want to curl up with a good book and pumpkin spice latté. Fall just seems to announce, “I’ve arrived!”.
- The clothes – Pulling out those cozy sweaters, scarves, and boots you have missed all summer brings forth an excitement while seeing the stores fill with cozy coats and accessories provides sartorial inspiration for the new season.
- The food and drink – Apple cider, pumpkin spice lattés, pecan pie, butternut squash soup… need I go on? For the most elementary epicure autumn proves a delightful tasting season filled with fall-friendly flavors.
- The celebrations – Farmers harvesting their crops, local festivals, pumpkin carving, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade demonstrate how the autumnal season brings people together to celebrate the seasons many offerings.
