The Doctor's New Companion?

By Hanna Inoue on September 28, 2012

Many of you have probably heard of the Doctor — a Time Lord that travels through time and space in a spaceship called the TARDIS to save worlds from aliens causing the occasional genocide.

You haven’t heard of it? Fear not! Watching this show is probably one of the best things you will ever do.

Over the course of the series, the Doctor has had multiple regenerations and several companions. The current Doctor (played by Matt Smith) has two companions: the alluring Scottish spitfire Amy Pond, and her puppy-like husband Rory Williams.

However, this next episode that airs this coming Saturday, is the end of the ‘Ponds’ (the Doctor refers to the couple as the ‘Ponds’ rather than the ‘Williams’). What does this mean for Doctor Who fans? Lots of tears and heartbreak, of course, but viewers can look forward to the Doctor’s new companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.

But questions have arisen over Coleman’s role as the Doctor’s new companion. Instead of airing her debut in the Christmas special, writer Steven Moffat has cast her as Oswin, a girl trapped in a Dalek in the first episode of series seven, “Asylum of the Daleks”. And because Oswin and the Doctor had zero recollection of each other, it is safe to assume that they had not met before. While in the past, the series would send the Doctor back in time to meet someone (e.g. River Song), because Oswin nor the Doctor knew each other, this had not occurred either. Therefore, how is Coleman going to tie in as the Doctor’s new companion if she already made an appearance as Oswin in “Asylum of the Daleks”? Is BBC going to portray Coleman as Oswin’s twin? Mother? That would be quite inconvenient and strange.

Moffat can only keep viewers guessing as to how Coleman will jump in as the Doctor’s next stowaway, but the viewers are clutching their armrests tightly in anticipation of the major changes coming to the series.
