Where's the Apple Pie?
It is official. Fall is upon us. The trees are transforming and the temperature is finally dropping. The midwest has started to undergo its annual change from flip-flops and tank tops to jeans and sweatshirts.
With the noticeably stronger wind and the obvious change in attire, it would be hard for anyone not to realize that autumn has come.
My entire life, I have always welcomed and embraced fall. With fall comes Thanksgiving, football Sundays, boots and sweaters, and of course– FALL FOOD. Some of my favorites are apple cider, pumpkin pies, caramel apples, chili, hot cocoa, sweet potatoes, pumpkin cookies, apple crisps, Halloween candy, turkey, and– last but not least– apple pie.
Fall is just not Fall without these foods. Autumn without apples is like Christmas without snow: a tragedy. So I cannot help but find myself wondering, “Where are all these foods, Ohio State?”
I have been terribly disappointed thus far by the lack of autumn spirit here in Columbus. I can except that there will be no giant hay maze on the oval and I can deal with the fact that there are not pumpkin patches or apple orchards anywhere on campus, but I simply cannot grasp the fact that stereotypical fall foods are nowhere to be found.
To me this is an outrage; it’s a giant slap in the face of Mother Nature herself. I mean, is it too much to ask for there to be some apple cider in the dining halls or some apple pie on the dessert rack?
Now, before you go and say that I am crazy and that this disappointment is a little premature considering that it is only the end of September, I happen to know that I am not the only student who feels this way. Just the other day, I heard some fellow freshmen taking notice of the absence of pumpkin related foods in the dining halls. Also, if this is not convincing evidence enough, I witnessed a student complaining to a Union Market employee that there should be some caramel instead of peanut butter out for students to dip their apples into.
I can only say that I hope that Ohio State gets its act together, and fast. We need to step up our game and bring out the apple pie. A little whipped cream too would be nice. Because really, what’s apple pie without the whipped cream?
