Can That Be Recycled?
Let me start this article by ensuring you, the reader that I love Eckerd College, and am fond of the majority of its students. However it has bothered me recently to see so many of my fellow students throw things away that really ought to be recycled. I have seen people throw away a cup or piece of paper when a recycling bin is right next to it; if you are wondering I am that guy you see taking bottles out of the trash to recycle.
Recycling is not, as some people seem to believe, a waste of time. According to the EPA recycling reduces the need for landfills, prevents pollution and saves energy by reducing the need for new materials to be created, helps conserve natural resources and reduces greenhouse gases that result in global climate change. With all these benefits, is it not worth a little bit of extra time? If you are confused about what can and cannot be recycled go to epa.gov.
I will admit to being guilty of throwing something away because it was more convenient than finding a recycling bin. Also at times it is difficult to find a recycling bin, many cities in this country simply have not made it a priority. However here at Eckerd, particularly this year with the addition of several new recycling bins around campus, it is easier than ever to recycle that soda can, you may have to carry it another hundred feet, but afterword you can take a small amount of satisfaction in the knowledge that you have done just a little bit of good that day. I used to make it a goal everyday to recycle something that someone had already thrown away.
My goal of this article has not been to preach, I am certainly no saint myself. I don’t mean to make anyone to feel bad, nor do I think I am going to change the world, but if a couple of people who read this article recycle a little more it will be worth it. So next time thinks CAN THAT BE RECYCLED?
