Meeting People in College Doesn't Have to be That Hard

By Ashley McElmurry on September 20, 2012

It’s the first day of school, you walk in to the halls nervous and anxious wondering what everyone is going to think. Are they going to judge me for my hair? What about my backpack? Oh dear did I really put two different colored shoes on? Well this is the feeling most of us got our freshman year of high school. Now, it’s a whole different ball game! You thought high school was intimidating? Welcome to College, where the halls turn in to roads with bicyclers and the classes get bigger and the building turns into twenty buildings. I am not trying to say this to scare you but I know that the first day of college for me was one of the scariest days of my life, and so were the following three months. Meeting people was tough but I am here to tell you that everything is going to be okay and give you some tips on how to make some friends in college!

First off, GET INVOLVED. Coming from high school where I was involved in everything, I decided I was going to focus on school only. I was WRONG, STUPID, and LONELY. When you get involved you have the choice to pick from several organizations with several different people who are going through the exact same thing as you. Get involved and use your passion or interests for something that benefits your college social life. Plus, making connections through organizations can help you network and benefit your future when looking for a job.

Number two, you see an open seat in between two people? SIT THERE! Do not sit in the back all by yourself with no around you. I promise you, it will make the class ten times more boring. When you sit around someone or in the middle of two people, you have the chance to meet the people around you and exchange information for study groups or whatever. It’s probably the easiest and quickest way to meet people and feel less secluded.

Lastly, take advantage of events like football games, concerts, community service events, and other things around the campus or College Station area. Sometimes it is nice to do things like that because you get to meet people, experience something new, and make a once in a lifetime memory. No football game, community service, or concert will ever be the same and making these memories will help you enjoy the college life more. Now, if you are ever worried about not having someone to go with, just go anyway! There will be tons of people around you just waiting for new interaction.

Everyone knows that college is stressful and rough sometimes. It can be very hard to meet people but it is all up to you, and with these few tips you can do it right!
