Some Spinoffs/Adaptations of "Gangnam Style"
I’m sure you’ve heard of the viral new Korean pop song “Gangnam Style” by PSY or seen the amazing music video, but what you might not have seen is the plethora of people responding to it, whether through repurposing the music or by incorporating the dance in various situations. Here is some of the best work that’s recently spawned from this ridiculously awesome sensation:
1. Gangnam Style for Orchestra
Ok, so let’s start with my favorite. This is pretty incredible. This guy named Walt Ribeiro takes dumb pop songs and rewrites them for orchestra performance. How awesome is that? He’s done everything from Carly Rae Jepsen to Daft Punk. Let’s just say that not only does this sound awesome, but it turns a pretty cheesy song into something seemingly classy and cultured. In twenty years, you can play this version in front of people without looking stupid, although we all know what you’ll be singing in your head…
Like most Hitler remixes, this is borderline offensive, but this is also lame. I mean, it’s decent for the first five seconds, because you don’t know what to expect, and then you hear German, so you’re thrown off. But, after that, it’s repetitive and, well, meh. But wait, there’s more! Seriously, there’s another one. And… another.
There can’t be a viral song without someone doing a mashup of it. Although I hate Carly Rae Jepsen with my whole soul, this is well-done. I mean, it has “Gangnam Style” in it, and there’s no Hitler, so what could be bad about it?
So, a bunch of dudes mimicked the “Gangnam Style” video and went on Chatroulette. It’s pretty funny, and the reactions to the people of Chatroulette prowling for nudity are priceless.
PSY also has some funny things to say about other parodies of his song. Check them out here.
