The Pooh You Get In Care Packages

By Taylor Hedge on September 18, 2012

From the moment you see it the world slows down to a halt…

Your heart starts beating faster…Your hands get twitchy with anticipation…Your mind starts to race…Curiosity envelops you.

What’s inside?…Who’s it from?…What could it possibly be?

This is the magic of getting a care package at college.

Now maybe this is a bit overdramatized but you get my point. Care packages are a necessity of life in college. Because we all know running out of food happens fast and too often, unless you have a car and the money to spend. But considering you’re a college student you probably don’t have either (like me). Also missing home is common so it is nice to get something special from home.

For instance, today I received my very first college care package. When I opened the box the first thing on top was a single letter from my mother:

Tay,

Here is a bunch of good stuff that I picked up while I was out.

A funny thing happened to me at Target.

While I was going through some of the clothes, out of the corner of my eye I saw something standing by the side of the rack but I didn’t pay any attention so I continued to shop. When I was in the laundry and storage area I had this strange feeling I was being watched and followed. I looked around and saw nothing. So I grabbed my latte and continued to shop (very cautiously) and picked up some groceries and started towards the checkout stand. I still had this feeling I was being watched so I watched all the other shoppers. As I was turning a corner I heard my name (in a tiny voice). And running up to me was Pooh Bear. He said, “Please take me with you. I’ve been watching you pick out some stuff for Tay’s care package and I want to come.” So I picked him up and he gave me a big hug. I put him into my cart and the rest is history!

Take care

I love you very very much.

- Mom

And what do you know, inside my package, among a bra bag, lint roller, food and other necessities, was a Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal. By the time I grabbed Pooh I was already tearing up.

Ever since I was little I’ve been in love with Winnie the Pooh. For my mom to not only buy me a Pooh stuffed animal, but also write this elaborate story is a big deal for me. So the whole day I went parading around my dorm complex with my Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal. I actually explained the story to multiple strangers because I was just so happy. It was an interesting sight for many people I’m sure. But any piece of home is a blessing since I don’t have the privilege of going home every weekend (California is not very close to Florida).

And when life gets hectic (which it will) I am going to slow the world down to a halt and hug my Pooh. Whenever I hug my Pooh I feel like I’m getting a loving hug from my mother. So appreciate the little things you will receive in your care packages these next few months because they will never fail to reconnect you to the home you miss.
