'Perks' Premieres in Los Angeles
The long-awaited film “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” premiered in Los Angeles yesterday, bringing Stephen Chbosky’s bestselling novel to life through his own original screenplay.
It was a momentous occasion for fans worldwide, including star Emma Watson, who tweeted in joy when she saw herself on the cover a recent republishing of the 1999 novel, writing, “I can’t believe I get to be on the front of this book. It’s just too cool.”
The actress proved “too cool” herself at the red carpet event in a champagne Giorgio Armani gown (though she narrowly escaped a wardrobe malfunction) along with co-star Ezra Miller and a handsome cardboard cutout of the film’s absent star, Logan Lerman, who was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts.
Fans of the book have been living on limited press photos and clips for weeks, but now have a mere 10 days to wait until the Sept. 21 wide theatrical release.
“I didn’t expect much from the book at first. However, what I found was that the central character, Charlie, and I had an odd number of things in common,” said fan Lydia Buzzard. “I know that Charlie is nothing but words on paper. I know that his imagined tales might never make their way into my life. But I also know that Charlie gave me hope to believe that not all wallflowers will have to be wallflowers all the time, and whenever I feel lonely or lost or sad, I’ll go back and spend the night reading that book. Each time, I remember that even though it’s not apparent, it’s possible that the world needs people like me. Best of all, I get the reassurance that ‘things are good with me, and even if they’re not, they will be soon enough.’”
