Fashion at the 2012 VMA's by a Non-Fashion Guru

By Brittany Tai on September 20, 2012

If you’re anything like me, you appreciate the new fashion styles and occasionally wear the newest [affordable] trends or try to imitate it with bargains. If you’re anything like me, you know we don’t own every issue of Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, etc and we’re okay with that. And if you’re anything like me, you know that it doesn’t take a fashion expert or guru to know what doesn’t look good, despite the amount an outfit costs or what material it’s even made out of. Bottom line–we’re not that fashionably-challenged to spot out a hit or miss.

This past Thursday, I regrettably missed the VMA’s because my internal clock demanded it was bedtime at 7:00pm. I was able to catch bits and pieces on TV and online and I just couldn’t help but notice all the crazy things celebs seemed to be wearing. Now I took the time to really think about these outfits and imagined what they would look like in real life, but I could not could not give it the benefit of the doubt. I found myself painfully staring at them, shaking my head in disapproval at the celebs whose outfits were just…not my taste…in any time or life. So here I am, sharing my visions of the bad, good and bleh ensembles I noticed in my delayed showings of the VMA’s.

Okay, Ms. Miley Cyrus. Love the dress, especially those sleeves. It gives it that mysterious, yet elegant look. The only thing I can’t say I like is that hair. Short hair is classy hair, but that punk-ish afro hairstyle needs to go. It doesn’t mesh well and it makes me just want to look at the neck down. Maybe some tips from Charlize Theron would help.

My girl, Katy Perry. I was KP for Halloween once. I won $50 in the costume contest for wearing her cupcake bra and blue hair. :) She looks incredibly gorgeous in this dress. I don’t usually go for the half solid, half opaque outfits but this one is gold. Maybe because of that train with those half sleeves and square cut bust-line. The black hair is a little bit of a change, but this woman rocks anything she wears.

Why, Ke$ha. Why?! I can’t help but feel little creepy crawly’s all over me. This dress looks like it was made out of spiders. Not digging it at all. And that bag(?) looks like she chopped a fox tail, sewed a zipper onto it and called it a bag. Cute…for Suri Cruise, maybe. Obviously animals inspired this outfit. C’mon, Ke$ha! Get it together. You already have a dollar sign in your name…

This outfit is great…for the mall. Emma, your HP days are over. Now it’s time to get hot, or something else. But this mini candy cane looking skirt and semi-matching top should not be worn to the VMA’s. I know it’s not the Grammy’s or anything, but I’ve seen you do better! I see your hair is growing out though…:)

I was really swooning over Colton Haynes in his fitted suit with his straight legged pants… til I got to his shoes. Umm…shiny studded? No thanks. From afar, it looks like he’s wearing a one piece suit. Those shoes match too much with his pants and jacket. Maybe I’d like his shoes any other day, but not with this outfit. He’s still nice to look at, though. Heyyy!

Well I hate to cut it short, I could go on all day but then I wouldn’t want to drag on the fact that I’m no “fashion guru.” These were just a few that stood out to me, the good and bad. I got these pictures from our good friends at The Huffington Post, and you can see more by clicking here.
