Savor the Summer

By Anselme Ndanu on August 21, 2012

As summer comes to an end, a cloud of anxiety casts over most students. It is at this point that we realize summer goals have not been met and the rush to preserve the summer’s fun is now in effect. For most of us, summer is over and the preparation for the upcoming school year is top priority. Although organization is important, I have some ideas to help you squeeze in some summer fun. In New York City, there are many events that will distract you from the overwhelming anticipation of school. Here are a few that caught my interest:

 Afro Punk Festival August 25-26th

Afro Punk is a festival that showcases up and coming artists as well as established musicians. This year’s line-up includes Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Das Racist, Toro Y Moi and many more. The Nike Battle for the Street Skate Competition, the largest in NYC, will also be held at the festival. The Afro Punk Festival is great because you can see all of your favorite artists as well as discover new music for FREE.

Jazz in the Square July19-September 20th

If you like a more relaxed atmosphere then Jazz in the Square is the event for you. This event is held in Union Square every Tuesday from 12pm to 1:30pm. The program is a collaboration between The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and NYC Department of Park and Recreation. Jazz in the Square is the perfect soundtrack to a mellow picnic or a great novel.

 MOMA PS1 Warm UP July7-September 8th

PS, dubbed the coolest museum in New York City, hosts the best parties in the summer. Located in Long Island City, Queens, the Warm Up introduces party goers to DJ’s like Jamie xx, Fools Gold, Just Blasé and many more. The parties are from 2-9pm and cost $15 for admission; this may seem a little steep for students but trust me it is worth every penny.

So don’t spend the last weeks of summer dreading homework and 15-paged papers. Live in the moment and make memories with your friends, it will give you something to day dream about during a boring lecture.
