Living a Healthy Life –Fresno Style
As a college student there never seems to be enough time in a day to get everything done. It feels as though so much time is either very productive or spent working in classrooms and others times it is spent sleeping or lounging. But to get a healthy balance and active lifestyle we need to have both physical and mental outlets. Here are five things that can improve your health and overall college experience.
1. Workout Around Town
There are many ways for college students to stay fit on and off of campus. The Student Recreational Center offers a two-story facility where you can workout alone, in a group setting, classes, games and more. Since your student fees already pay for your “membership” to this gym, why not take advantage of it while you can. Join a weekly spin class, burn fat in Zumba or join an intramural sports team. There are also trails around town and in Woodrow and Yosemite Park and Lewis Creek that offer beautiful sights, connection with nature and a nice workout.

2. Clubs on Campus
There are many dance and fitness clubs on campus that host events and fairly cheap to free classes for students to partake. For example the Salsa club host’s salsa dance lessons every Friday for $5. It is a great way to stay in shape, learn new dance moves and meet and mingle with your fellow classmates.

3. Places of Study
To keep a peace of mind and make sure you don’t fall me hind there are many places you can take time to study, relax, and get help on campus. The Henry Madden Library offers three stories, a basement and part of the old library building to focus on your studies. Not to mention Starbucks for those that may need a late night pick-me-up. The basement is where all the magic happens. There are a host of FREE tutors in the learning center as well as a laptop checkout for those who do not lug around their own or do not have one. There is also the writing center and the University Student Union to study and seek homework help.

4. Community Service
For those who like to go out in the world, give back and do something meaningful there are hundreds of community service opportunities. On campus there is a daycare that social work and other majors can participate in. Close to campus there is the Bulldog Pantry where students can fill bags with donated groceries for families in need.

5. Sleeping and Eating
Although there never seems to be enough time in a day and sleeping or eating usually happens at a bare minimum or rarely, both are really important. Be sure to have six small meals or snacks if you cannot have the basic three. Pack a lunch or bring snacks and fruits to campus to be sure you are eating and getting the nutrients you need. It is recommended we get at least eight to nine hours of sleep per night, while we college students average around six. The best solution is to establish a sleep ritual with a set bedtime (yeah sounds kiddy, but helps) including about two extra hours on weekends.
