10 Brutally Honest Survival Tips for Sorority Recruitment

By Lauraeliz on August 14, 2012

It’s that time of year again! Yep, RUSH TIME! For those of you going through recruitment, it’s a stressful, hectic, and emotional week, but nothing you can’t handle with a few tips and tricks.

  1. It’s hot. Get over it. I mean, its AUGUST. You are going to sweat, and there is nothing you can do about it. The best thing you can do is wear clothes that won’t show it as much and wear a ton of deodorant.
  2. Bring a fan. Not like some huge obnoxious one, but a small battery powered fan that can keep you from dripping in sweat.
  3. Don’t get that fan caught in your hair. You will probably have a mini anxiety attack and then die of embarrassment. So please, don’t be an idiot and stick the fan so close to your face it sucks up your hair.
  4. Dress to impress. That means dress in a way that compliments your body and personality, not what happens to be on the cover of Vogue.
  5. Don’t tell anyone what you’re thinking. You will make friends during rush, but it’s none of their business what your favorite house is. You never know who might know someone on the inside; and your little comment could get you cross-cut so fast it will make your head spin.
  6. Wear comfortable shoes. If your shoes aren’t comfortable, but they happen to be TO DIE FOR, wear them in the houses and bring a spare pair to walk in between parties.
  7. Bring oil sheets or coffee filters to fight the shine and blot the sweat. Unless you’re cool with having your makeup drip off your face all day.
  8. There IS such a thing as TOO MUCH makeup. Don’t paint it on! You’re there to show people the REAL you, not the airbrushed pageant queen version.
  9. Don’t listen to stereotypes about chapters at your university. Just because someone might THINK all the girls in a certain sorority are one way doesn’t mean they actually are. Give them all a chance before you write them off based on rumors and labels.
  10. Pick the house that best fits YOU. Don’t choose based on your friends, or your family, or what you think looks better. This is a decision that will affect the rest of your life. I know its cliché, but on bid day you meet the women who will be your lifetime best friends and probably your bridesmaids. This decision should be about how a house makes YOU feel and nothing else.

I hope this was helpful and I wish everyone luck during Recruitment 2012!
