On How I Met Blogging Sensation Tavi Gevinson

By Jesy Odio on August 9, 2012

At the age of eleven, I kept a diary. At that same age, Tavi Gevinson began her blog, Style Rookie, and immediately became an Internet sensation over night. Her down-to-earth attitude yet very mature thoughts on style, fashion, and culture caught the attention of The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Harper’s Bazaar. Tavi is currently sixteen, and has checked off every single item in my career bucket list.

After being a source of inspiration for Rodarte’s Target collection and being personally invited to New York Fashion Week at the age of thirteen, she confessed she “wasn’t that into fashion anymore”, except this did not mean she was done blogging. She had something way bigger in mind. This is when her online magazine, Rookie, was born. Every month the website features a theme, three articles are published a day: After School Special, Dinner Time, and Sweet Dreams.

A year after she launched her online magazine, Tavi went on a nation-wide tour along Petra Collins of the Ardorous.

The intersection of Cahuenga Blvd and Sunset Blvd has everything I hold dear about Los Angeles. I love everything that is nicely and tightly packed into this one block: Umami Burger, Amoeba Music Records, the Arclight Cinerama Dome, and Space 15 Twenty.

Space 15 Twenty is not your typical art exhibition. The place praises everything about the eclectic yet whimsical vibe about Los Angeles. On July 28th, there was a strange magnetic field attracting every blogging writer, including myself, into the gallery. Blogging phenomenon, Tavi, and Petra held the opening night for the exhibition of “Strange Magic”.

The ultimate sleepover hosted by Tavi Gevinson @ Strange Magic

The only way of describing this exhibition is by attempting to illustrate what the inside of a female brain would look as she goes through her adolescent years, or let’s just call it, the ultimate sleep-over experience. Glittering stickers, plastic flowers, and a tree house (yes, a tree house) were part of the scene in the place. Art works by the Ardorous covered every single wall. Let’s just say that the only thing that triggered the girls to look away from Tavi’s angelic face was the replica of panties covered with period blood skillfully placed right by the bed located in the middle of the room.

The "Strange Magic" exhibition was organized by Rookie Magazine and The Ardorous

For some girls, this only brought a sense of nostalgia about their innocent years, to others; it brought a sense of belonging to those that were never able to have this kind of experience. The girls of Rookie made sure no one would feel a fear of missing out. After having such an engaging attitude with all their fans, these girls have enabled the place to bring a sense of belonging to everyone who entered the premises.

I’ll never understand how an entire exhibition revolved around the thoughts of a sixteen-year-old; it does give me hope, nevertheless, that young girls like Tavi Gevinson are famous for their hard work and profound impact on the blogging atmosphere.

Check out Rookie Mag to see what Tavi’s all about. You never know what you might learn from a sixteen-year-old. She certainly has a more profound perspective in feminism, culture, and fashion.
