Getting extra money in your pocket is good for any college student, so not only can you afford rent and food, but you can also save up for a rainy day. There are two routes you can take to make money, based on what works best for you.
Many college students are turning to side hustles instead of a more traditional campus job. There are different benefits and negatives to both, and it may change based on the type of person you are and what you are looking for in a job. Both teach great skills such as responsibility and time management, but they are not created equal. Here are the basics of what to expect with both a side hustle and a campus job so that you can decide what is best for you before diving headfirst into your part-time career.

Side Hustle
Side hustles are less traditional than a campus job but may be beneficial to you as a college student who is trying to squeeze in ways to make income while also balancing your college career. Examples of a side hustle can include starting your own small business, such as making and selling jewelry or crochet items online or in person, or offering different services, such as babysitting or tutoring. For a side hustle, pursue the skills and passions you already have to bring in some income. It might sound great, but is it really what is best for you?
Self-Motivation
In order to work through a side hustle, you have to be self-motivated. You are your own boss when you have a side hustle. For some students who are always eager to push themselves, a side hustle is a great opportunity for them. If you thrive on making and reaching your own goals, a side gig is probably great for you. There is not going to be anyone breathing down your neck telling you what to do and how to do it.
On the other hand, if you are not good at pushing yourself, a side gig might not be for you. There is no one there to check your progress if that is how you thrive.
Consider how you are with your college assignments. Do you get them done quickly so you can focus on more, or do you let them collect dust as you procrastinate? You have to work hard with a side hustle in order to earn money. If you do not market yourself or work on your projects, you are going to make significantly less money, and it may not be worth it.
Flexible Hours
Since you are your own boss, the schedule is yours to set so you can block out time as you see fit. As a babysitter, tell parents your hours and when you can and cannot work. This way, you can focus on your assignments when necessary, and when you are free, devote time to your side hustle. This is something very enticing for students, stressed out between classes, projects, and exams.
Campus Job
There are many on-campus jobs that can appeal to everyone, such as working in the mailroom, the library, or the dining hall. There is no small role, and they are all there to help you get through college and help the campus get everything done.
Stable Income
As opposed to a side hustle, a campus job provides a more stable income. You know your hourly rate and how many hours you work per week, so you know what to expect with each paycheck. If you want a consistent amount of income each week, a campus job is probably going to be the best for you.
Meet New People
Campus jobs are also a great way for you to connect with people and network. There are your fellow college students who can become good friends throughout your college career and spend time outside of work together, fostering a sense of community. Having friends makes college less lonely, and you can attend events together. Then there are also your mentors and bosses that you meet and work with. As you prove yourself as a great asset to this campus job, they may keep you in mind for other careers once you graduate. Everyone has connections, and it is important you make yours. You never know who knows who and who can lead you to something great.
So, does a side hustle or a campus job sound better for you? Ask your friends and family what they did to make extra money in college and if they have any advice for either opportunity. Regardless of what you choose, both will be a great way to help you save up throughout college.
