Creating a Babysitter Job Description That Works for Students

When you are looking for a babysitter, you likely need to craft a job description. You will need to include information, especially information that will help college students determine if they will be able to do the job. Knowing what information is helpful will help you craft a better job description, and this will help you receive more applications tailored toward what you are looking for.

Schedule

If you have a set schedule that you know you will need babysitter coverage for, include it in the job description. College students are busy and have several obligations. Including the schedule in the job description will allow them to see if they can include the babysitting gig in their current schedule. This way, they are not wasting their time or yours by going through the interview process only to find out that your schedules do not align with each other.

However, if your schedule is flexible and can work around the student sitter’s schedule, put that in the description as well. That way, college students looking for a babysitting job with flexible hours can apply. Putting whatever schedule or flexible hours in the job description allows potential applicants to know exactly what they are signing up for.

Desired credentials and experience

You likely have a specific amount of experience that you want a babysitter to have, so make sure you include it in the job description. Keep an open mind, as a student wanting to babysit may not have exact experience, but they may have taken classes pertaining to childcare either at school or in their free time.

It is also important that you include any credentials that you want your babysitter to have, whether they already have them when they apply or can get them as part of the onboarding process with your family. If they do not already have the certifications you are asking for, consider compensating the sitter for them, especially if you hire the sitter.

Soft skills you need

While having childcare or child development skills is great, there are soft skills your babysitter should demonstrate. As such, these should be listed in your job descriptions. Soft skills can include things like leadership, communication skills, sensitivity, patience, and responsibility. It does not matter if a babysitter can rattle off all of the stages of development that children go through if they are not kind, caring, and compassionate towards your child. The babysitter could have all of the certifications in the world, but it does not matter if they are playing on their phone instead of engaging with your child.

Expected responsibilities

Babysitters have a set amount of responsibilities that are part of their job description. Usually, their tasks focus on caring for the children instead of implementing home care tasks. However, if you expect your babysitter to do more things around the house than most babysitters are expected to do, be sure to outline these in the job description.

Even if you do not have any additional tasks or responsibilities, it is still important to put the responsibilities you do expect in the description. This is especially important for students who may have limited babysitting experience, if any, so they can know what they are expected to do.

Pay rate

It may seem odd to put a pay rate on the job description, but this allows potential babysitters to see what your budget is. If it is negotiable, make sure you mention that, especially if it is based on experience. Including pay information allows candidates to make a decision about whether or not the job will be worth their time and effort, especially since they have a busy schedule already. If you are unsure about how much to pay, check with other parents nearby to see what they are paying their babysitters and pay yours accordingly.

Be informational

Job descriptions are meant to be brief synopses of the babysitting job, but it is important that you are as informative as possible. Providing as much detail as possible ensures that candidates know what to expect and can decide whether or not the position is a right fit for them. If your posting does not have enough information, they may apply and not be able to accept the job if it does not align with what they are looking for.

Personality

There are thousands of babysitting jobs and job descriptions posted across the internet, so it is important that your posting gets visibility. Inject your personality and a bit of humor into the description so that candidates can get a sense of who you are. Include things that make you and your children special. This allows them to find out a bit about your family ahead of time, which helps candidates have as much information as possible.
