1. Experience

You are leaving your baby in the hands of someone else, you need them to have experience caring for children, especially babies the same age as yours. Now, this does not necessarily mean that they have taken paid babysitting gigs before. If they have, cool! If not, there are different ways they could gain experience! Caring for younger siblings or other family members, working at some kind of daycare.

Ask them about their experience levels and comfort in caring for babies the same age as yours. Since babies require a very watchful eye, your new babysitter needs to know what exactly they are doing and how to best care for your baby.

2. Patience

Patience is most definitely a must-have for all babysitters! Occasionally, when children or babies do not behave as we want, some can get angry, annoyed, snippy, upset, or other negative emotions. The best babysitters are extremely patient. They should never blow up on your children unless under serious circumstances. If your baby is a particularly fussy one, a patient babysitter will do their best to make your baby happy, eat all they need, and everything they can without giving up. They will follow through on everything they need to do.

3. Playful Energy

Children of all ages need a babysitter who can keep up with them and play with them! While babies typically are not running around, they still love to play! Whether it is something simple like peekaboo and making different facial expressions, bicycle legs, or using stimulating toys like rattles, the babysitter must have that energy and be willing and happy to play with your baby in the ways they like most! Some babysitters do not like to play or they are not good at it, leaving the baby bored or lonely.

Babies need to play and be played with in order to learn important skills so that their brains can develop. The more your child plays, the more they learn! It is an important part of growing up, so find the silliest, goofiest babysitter out there! At least one who is willing to act like it for the sake of your child!

4. Quick Thinker with a Clear Mind

Another must-have quality in a babysitter is a quick mind. They need to think on their feet in case of an emergency instead of just panicking. They need to remain calm and call who they need to or do what they can so that anything can be resolved in the best possible way.

Not only are they quick, but they are able to keep their mind clear so they can focus on the important tasks on hand. Your babysitter should not get distracted so easily. This can relate to emergencies because the priority should be on your baby instead of drifting somewhere else, but even in the case of a regular day-to-day! Their mind should be clear enough that they can think thoroughly and keep their attention on your child and not something trivial that causes neglect.

5. Punctual

Your babysitter needs to be punctual. They arrive when they say they will so they do not leave you waiting. Admittedly, this is more of a point that helps you more than your baby, but it ensures that your baby will be cared for at all times. They have a babysitter coming, leaving you to enjoy your night off and know that your baby is in good hands. If your potential babysitter is late for an interview, ask why. As humans, we occasionally do run into trouble that causes us to be late. It’s up to you to determine if their excuse is a valid one or not.

Hopefully, this list of five must-have babysitter qualities will help you find the best person to care for your baby when you are unavailable and can help narrow down your search a bit. These are some of the most important things for a babysitter to have. However, do look at these babysitters as a whole. If they have these must-haves but they have a very big red flag, do not ignore that in favor of this list! Finding a babysitter can be stressful, but you’ve got this!
