Whether or not you are living in your first apartment or living alone, apartment security is always a good thing to have. Not only is it good for your physical well-being, but your mental well-being as well! There is nothing that can give you more peace of mind than knowing that you and your home are safe.

Buy Renter’s Insurance

One of the best things to look into and get is renter’s insurance. It might sound like an extra cost you do not want to pay, but it is significantly worth it. If you happen to be a victim of theft, fire, or another disaster, they will reimburse you for your lost and damaged possessions. Knowing that you are secure in the event of an incident can really help you relax.

What or how much they will reimburse varies based on company and package, but GradGuard offers an incredible one, specifically designed with college students in mind! They will protect loads of your physical belongings, especially your laptops, gaming systems, bicycles, clothing, and more! GradGuard even partners with many colleges around the country to protect your on-campus housing.

Depending on your belongings, you might want a different amount of coverage. Luckily for you, they can give you a free estimate! Plus, GradGuard keeps their prices low and does not need any credit score, nor do they penalize you for filing a claim with them. They know what they are for, and they do it right!

Change Your Locks

One of the best ways to keep your home safe is to change your locks as soon as you move in. After all, you do not know who the last tenant gave locks to, and if they notified them of moving out. You do not want some unknown person walking in without your knowledge or consent, regardless of if they meant harm or not!

However, you cannot change locks without your landlord’s permission. Once changed, make sure to give a new key to them. They need it in case they need to enter for an emergency, or if you locked yourself out!

Now that you have new locks, only give copies to those you trust. Limit it to family and very close friends, plus the occasional pet sitter or plant waterer. Knowing exactly who has access to your apartment is very important to apartment security.

Secure Doors and Windows

This is more than just new locks. A lot of sliding doors and windows do not have keys, but still need to be locked. Some robbers learned how to unlock them from the outside, but do not worry! While they make rods for this specific purpose, which you can do, you can also use cheaper things like blocks of wood. Jam it in the sliding door so it cannot open and block the windows from opening too high. This gives you more security as the front door will be the easiest entrance and exit.

Close Your Blinds

We all love to get sunlight, especially after a long day of class or work. However, once the sun goes down, you might want to close your blinds or curtains. Depending on where your apartment is, people passing by might be able to look inside. If you do not want to close them, that is fine, but be careful not to do anything too risque in front of the open window with the lights on! This is just so people are not snooping.

Keep Something By Your Bed

This is not necessary, but having something there does help some people feel more secure. This can be something similar to an old baseball bat just so you can defend yourself if need be. Hopefully, it will just collect dust and you will never use it, but if you hear a noise in the night, you might want it just in case. Even if it’s just a mouse!

Install Security

If it will help you to have eyes on your apartment even when you are out, do it! Plenty of companies make inexpensive but good-quality cameras. Whether it is a single doorbell camera or a couple more added inside, having that access makes your apartment more secure. You can look back through and see what happened and what time. Some are even motion-activated and send notifications to your phone so you can be updated at a moment’s notice. While this is not a necessity, it just gives your place more security.

While moving in on your own can be scary, there are a lot of great and helpful tips to keep your apartment or home safe and secure. GradGaurd can take most of the load off your shoulders while you focus on new locks, secure doors, and any other security measures you want to take for yourself.
