The Importance of CPR and First Aid Training for Babysitters

By Ashley Paskill on February 19, 2024

When you are looking for a babysitter, you are likely to choose one that has a CPR and first aid certification. Even if this is something you would not have thought about, someone may have recommended it to you. But why is it important? There are several reasons why this certification is crucial for your babysitter to have, but, ultimately, it comes down to your child’s safety.

Pool safety

Whether you have a pool in your backyard or you frequent the community pool, you may have your babysitter allow your kids to go swimming, especially over the summer. While the pool is fun for everyone who partakes, it is still important to remember that it can be dangerous. Anyone, including children, can drown in a few inches of water. There may be lifeguards on duty at your community pool, but your babysitter will likely be the only one nearby in your backyard pool, so it is crucial that they know CPR, just to be safe. Even at the community pool, your kids may be in arm’s reach of your babysitter, so they may be the first line of help should an emergency arise.

Kitchen care

Although the kitchen is within your home, it can be a dangerous place for children. From stoves to knives, several dangerous appliances and items within the kitchen can harm a child if they are left unsupervised. You may have strict rules for your children, but they may choose not to follow them when you are not home. You may also want your babysitter to cook and have your children help them. No matter the situation, your babysitter must know how to handle first aid emergencies like cuts and burns as these are common kitchen incidents.

Even if other parents are helping to oversee a playdate, having your babysitter know CPR and first aid can help in an emergency. The babysitter can step in to care for the victim while the other adults care for the other children or contact the proper parties to get additional assistance. The more people who know how to perform basic first aid and CPR, the better. It is important that your babysitter can step in and step up when needed, especially if your children undergo an emergency.

Playground safety

If your babysitter is with your kids all day, they may opt to go to a local playground and park. Although this is a fun place with safety features, it can still be dangerous and your babysitter will need to keep an eye on your child. Your child may fall off equipment, no matter how careful they are. No matter what the injury or illness is, having your babysitter know how to handle whatever may arise can assist other parents, guardians, or babysitters at the playground as well.

Illness care

Your child may be sick on the day your babysitter is there, or they may become sick while under the babysitter’s care. Either way, if your babysitter is first aid and CPR certified, they know the basics of caring for a child and know when it is time to get medical professionals involved. The certification will teach them signs of common illnesses and steps to take to care for the victims. They will also be aware of the importance of giving the correct medicine at the right dose.

Child comfort

When your child has an emergency, there is nothing worse than those around them panicking from not knowing what to do. Those around a victim of an emergency must remain calm so they do not make the situation any worse. If your babysitter is CPR and first aid certified, they can be more confident in taking care of your child, which allows them to be more comforting to your child should an emergency arise. Hiring a babysitter who knows basic first aid and CPR also allows your child to trust them more, especially if your child is more likely to need medical assistance (for instance, if they have severe allergies or a major medical condition).

General care

While it is rare for a life-threatening emergency to happen, it is still crucial for your babysitter to be prepared. It is more likely that your babysitter will be faced with basic first aid needs such as cuts, scrapes, and burns. Your babysitter should at least know how to handle the most basic cuts and how to care for them. If your babysitter is first aid and CPR certified, not only will they know how to handle emergencies should they arise, but they will likely be more mindful of how to prevent these emergencies and know the warning signs of certain illnesses and injuries. This will allow them to take proper action before things get worse.

Your child’s safety is the highest priority, so hiring a babysitter who is first aid and CPR certified is crucial.
