Southern Miss Football Stadium Vandalized
Southern Miss is known for its supportive school spirit and of course its football. The Golden Eagles’ supporters collectively take pride in the school campus and the beautiful football stadium. Unfortunately, on Monday night, the University of Southern Mississippi’s police department reported that the beloved football field had been vandalized for the first time in its history by spray paint. The letters “U, C, K” and “S” were sprayed on the turf at the end of “Southern Miss.”
While police are in the process of figuring out who would do such a thing, the task shouldn’t be too difficult since cameras are located inside the stadium. The Hattieburg American reports Southern Miss spokesman Jack Duggan says that the tapes are being reviewed. According to news, the massive Eagle head emblem in the core of the playing field has been defaced and there is small graffiti written in the south and end zone. “This is a criminal act that we take very seriously, and we intend to prosecute those responsible,” Duggan stated.
According to the Hattiesburg American, industrial cleaning products have been applied to the affected the areas. With the fall semester right around the corner, we can only hope that the school’s spirit isn’t affected by the vandalism.
The first game of the season is September 1, 2012, at 2:30pm against Nebraska. The first home game is scheduled for September 15, 2012, at 2:30pm against East Carolina. The “Fill To The Top” campaign will be in full effect for the home season-opening football game. The campaign’s goal is to fill the stadium to capacity for the season’s first home game.
