Why Moving Abroad Is A Good Thing
While moving abroad doesn’t come without its fair share of difficulties, it remains one of the best things you can do for yourself in this life. Besides being your gateway to seeing new places, trying new foods, and exploring stunning remote destinations, moving abroad is your chance to do a plethora of other things that’ll benefit you in the long run by allowing you to grow as a person. So, take it from someone who’s risked it all by making a big move abroad independently, and keep reading to find out why moving abroad is a good thing!

Stepping outside of your comfort zone. Face it: if you’ve spent the majority of your life living in the same environment, surrounded by the same people, doing the same thing day in and day out. You’ve become comfortable. Too comfortable, I might add. Stepping out of your comfort zone has become a foreign concept, as the riskiest thing you’ve done recently has been trying a new oil changing service and “splurging” on the fancier chips at the grocery store (they were twenty cents more, and if they taste worse than the original chips, then that’s just money down the drain!)
But when you move abroad, you have no choice but to step outside of your comfort zone. New people, new school, new job, new house, new rules to play by, new societal structure – everything’s different. Is it scary? Absolutely, undoubtedly, yes. But is it worth it? That’s a resounding yes, too. Because when you step outside of your comfort zone – and I mean, when you really step outside of your comfort zone – you’re setting yourself up for success and growth. It leaves you no choice but to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Becoming more open minded to the world around you. We think we’re open minded, accepting, and understanding. And honestly, that might be the case based on our previous experiences. But that’s the thing: when you’ve only lived in one or two cities, states, or countries in your entire life, you’ve been inadvertently limited in your worldview without even realizing it.
When you move abroad, you immerse yourself in a culture and society entirely different from what you’d grown accustomed to. In doing so, you start to see how priorities differ from country to country; you begin to discern how different cultures treat topics like courtesy, patience, and gratitude; you get the chance to do some introspection to see how your own cultural and societal upbringing influenced you without you even realizing it. That’s where real open mindedness truly begins.

Meeting people whom you’d otherwise never encounter. While the Internet has made an incredible impact on our lives through its ability to connect us to people halfway across the world, it’s still not a full-on substitute for the human connection you get when you meet someone in person. That’s yet another reason why moving abroad is a good thing: in leaving behind your familiar social circle back home, you’re forced to build new connections in an unfamiliar environment. And, take it from someone who’s been there and done that: the relationships you build once you move abroad will impact you in a way that you couldn’t have ever imagined, and it’s a pretty awesome feeling.
So, if you’ve been looking for that push to move abroad: this is your sign. I won’t lie and tell you that it’ll be easy, but you can trust me when I say that it’ll be worth it. Happy travels and enjoy the ride!
