How to Give Your Bedroom a Makeover
It’s never the wrong time to give your bedroom a makeover, but giving your bedroom some upgrades at the beginning of the new year is the perfect time to bring some change into your life. Giving your bedroom a makeover can be as simple as changing your bedding, or finally replacing some furniture after years of use. Not sure where to start on your bedroom makeover? Keep reading for tips on how to give your bedroom a makeover.
Focus on what you want to change
If you are the type to constantly apply upgrades to your space where you see fit, you may not have as much to change about your bedroom as you are more likely to be satisfied with how it already is. However, there are bound to be areas of your bedroom that may be left neglected in your ongoing upgrades, or areas that you always thought to yourself that you would like to change.
For example, your entertainment or TV area may be a constant source of stress for you, from your glitchy TV to a mess of cords between your TV and gaming consoles. If this is the case for you, focus on upgrading your TV area during your bedroom makeover.
On the other hand, if you spend a lot of time in your desk area, from getting ready to studying or working from home, your desk area may be your focus during your bedroom makeover. Bedroom makeovers can be daunting at first, but giving yourself a space to focus on can help you get started, and stick to a budget or achievable goal.
Change up textiles
One way to makeover your bedroom without a major hit to your wallet is by changing the textiles in your bedroom, from your bedding (pillows, throw blankets, comforters) to your rugs and window curtains. If you are renting your living space, this is also one of the most renter-friendly ways to makeover your space without violating the terms of your lease agreement.
As seasons change, you may already be swapping out your bedding on a more regular basis. Fluffy and thick comforters may be swapped out with thinner duvets or quilts as the weather cools or warms. Pillows and blankets can be swapped out to reflect the current season or holidays.
You may hate the dreary cream carpet that comes with your apartment, but placing a rug or two that you actually like can transform the space into something you enjoy. Changing out the curtains to fit your current taste is also an easy swap. If you don’t have curtains and have the standard shutters or window blinds, hang up a tension rod to cover them up with curtains.
Incorporate more lighting
Lighting can dramatically change the way a space feels. Depending on the lighting you have, a room can feel bright and welcoming to dark and dreary. Playing with the lighting in your bedroom can be a great way to approach a bedroom makeover.
If you are relying on natural lighting or the standard overhead ceiling light, it is time for a change. Lamps stationed in spots you spend more time in, from your bedside table to a reading corner, can make spaces better lit and more functional as a standard ceiling light is hardly sufficient in providing adequate lighting for the entire bedroom.
Dimmer switches, colored bulbs, and more can allow you to play with lighting in your bedroom and keep things fresh as your mood changes.
Make furniture changes
Depending on your budget and how long you have been living in the space, you may be living with the same furniture that you’ve had for years. In those years, your tastes may have changed and your needs for the space may have also changed. This can result in furniture that doesn’t match your current aesthetic, or furniture that no longer serves its purpose within your space.
For college students, for example, their furniture may be an eclectic collection of secondhand finds or standard, cheap furniture that they got to simply get the job done. Years later, the furniture may not be in the best shape, or may not be the quality the older version of themselves desires.
Upgrade your bedframe, from upgrading to a twin-sized futon to a queen-sized bedframe. Or, buy a new desk that gives you more workspace or ample storage overhead or under the desk.
Rearrange your room
Unfortunately, not everyone has the budget or time to put into a largescale bedroom makeover. This doesn’t mean that you have to keep your bedroom exactly the same, year after year. Take stock of your room and figure out how you can rearrange your room to refresh the space.
This can mean getting rid of a bookshelf that you no longer use to give yourself some room to move your desk into better lighting, or moving your bed from the center of the room to be pushed up against a wall to free up some floor space.
Bedroom makeovers can be as extravagant as you want them to be — good luck!
