6 Ways You Can Use Instagram in Your Recruitment Strategy

By Alicia Geigel on December 30, 2022

Outside of popular job sites like LinkedIn and Indeed, social media platforms like Instagram are some of the best ways to contact, recruit, and connect with potential hires for your company.

Are you a recruiter looking for fresh ways to find new hires on social media? Unfamiliar with Instagram but curious how to use it? Here are five tips to help you recruit potential hires on Instagram while building your online presence at the same time.

1. Carefully Choose the Profile Basics: When building any Instagram page, especially one for a business or company, you want to start off strong with the basics of your profile: a profile image, a username, and a short bio. These three elements will help users find you in a smooth and quick manner, and ultimately help generate more traffic to your company’s Instagram page. First and foremost, pick a username that will help users easily know that the account they are following is for your company page. If you have a unique company name, this should not be a problem, but if a username happens to be taken, use something like a dash or underscore to differentiate it from others, while also keeping it simplistic. Then, choose a profile picture that represents your company, such as a minimalist logo that is easy to recognize and identify. Lastly, create a short bio to put on your account. This will be one of the first things users see when they navigate to your page, so make it short and sweet, but impactful.

2. Capture Your Company’s Work Environment: Company work environments can feel impersonal online and through social media platforms like Instagram. Posts often are representative of the company as a whole, and not necessarily of the people that make up a company. While it is important to include other elements of your company on Instagram, like its goals, mission, products, and more, it is just as necessary to capture your company’s work environment. This can be achieved by sharing posts, like pictures, reels, and stories, of what an average day looks like in your company. Post short blurbs of interviews with employees about their work tasks and responsibilities, or even share snippets from a work lunch party. Doing so will make any potential recruits feel more connected to your company!

3. Take Advantage of Captions and Hashtags: In the world of social media, especially Instagram, hashtags are what make the app function. A hashtag is typically a word or phrase (with a # symbol) that categories the text in a post’s caption or picture. For example, you could share a picture of a group meeting and use the hashtag #teamwork in the caption. Captions and hashtags are a meaningful way for users to navigate the endless forms of content on Instagram and find your page. Consider using hashtags that describe the type of company you have, the type of work done at your company, or even popular ones like #work, #working, #job, #office, #business, #instagood, etc.

4. Hyperlink to Important Pages: Instagram is not solely used as a place to scroll and like various pictures. Rather, it is also a clever marketing tool that companies all over the globe use to draw traffic to their greater websites or shopping pages. As you are working on recruiting through your company’s Instagram, consider hyperlinking to your company website, your company’s jobs & career section, or other company pages like Twitter or Youtube so users can easily consume information or find important pages, like a job application page, for example. Sophie Deering of The Undercover Recruiter notes, “Instagram images are a good way to draw attention to any blog posts, jobs ads, etc. that you want to direct traffic to and you can do this by sharing the URL alongside other visually pleasing content that will capture people’s attention.”

5. Schedule Posts: A key to making an impact and making your posts reach a large-scale audience is scheduling all of your posts. Instagram users are most active on weekdays, specifically Wednesday and Thursday, so it is beneficial to post your most important content on these days as you likely can get the most viewership. A blog post by Talk Push explains, “Knowing this can help you plan ahead of when’s the best day to post for the highest visibility and maximum engagement of your content.”

6. Don’t Forget About Instagram Stories: In recent years, Instagram stories have become a popular means for users of all backgrounds, business or personal, to produce short-form content that perhaps does not need to be a permanent post on the main page. As users of all generations are invested in short-form content, posting images, videos, or text posts on your company’s Instagram story is a great way to engage with both followers and possible recruiters.
