The Best Jobs for College Students

College is expensive and the costs are only continuing to go up. This is why it can be a smart and necessary decision to get a job while in school. However, students must find one that fits their schedule as college can be a busy time. Here are the nine best jobs for college students that can be done at night or during the evening.

Bartending

Bartending starts at a reasonable rate and is usually in demand. Pay starts at $15 an hour and comes with tips. This occupation is a great option for college students looking to work part-time at night and collect some money. Clubs and bars are typically open late so students can work there and still get their work done. Bartending is a fit for those who like to speak to customers and thrive in a busy environment.

Retail

Although these kinds of jobs are frowned upon, a career in retail can teach people a lot about customer service and other skills in general. This can include working for a store, a fast food chain, or as a cashier for a supermarket. It can be a good first job for people looking to gain some experience and possibly join a union.

On-campus work/work-study

In my opinion, this is one of the best options for college students. There is nothing easier than being able to work on campus and not have to commute or figure out how to get somewhere. When I was in college, I worked a desk position in the recreation center where I could work nights and collect some extra income. Students can try to work in the library or in the dorms as an assistant. A teacher assistant position is also a possibility.

Babysitting

This has long been a good option as it pays a good amount of money. Some parents need someone to watch their kids while they are at work or have other obligations. This serves as another part-time night gig that students can do on the side. What also makes it great is students can do their work while working this kind of job. It can be hard to find people who need babysitting so students will have to advertise or know families who need a babysitter.

Freelance writing

I also did this while I was still in college. At times when I had some extra time after finishing homework or studying, I would sit in my dorm and type articles for some sites and do some freelance work. The good thing about this is this can be done from anywhere, and students can work this around their schedule. Although, this works as a good option for those who enjoy writing and are not tired of doing papers and assignments while attending school. Students will also need to have some proficiency in writing academically and professionally.

Tutoring

This is another job that can be done from anywhere and serve as a good way to make extra money. This can be an excellent way to build skills for those in school wanting to become a teacher. Students do not need a degree in order to do this.

Restaurant work

Similar to bartending, students can spend their weekends working part-time for a restaurant. Not only will it teach valuable lessons about customer service but it can be a good job depending on what type of restaurant it is. I personally have worked at some restaurants over breaks while in college to make some extra income.

Uber/Lyft driver

I know some friends who did this while in school to make some extra income. People can do this job whenever they want as they act like a freelancer, giving rides to those in need. It also serves as a good way to talk to more people and learn. This job is typically for those who enjoy driving, and obviously, who have a car on campus.

Typist 

Similar to freelance writing, this is for those who are excellent at typing and do not mind writing more while in school. This comes with a lot of remote work, making it a good option for students dorming in school.
