Packing for Vacation: 8 Tips for Organized Luggage

By Ashley Paskill on August 1, 2022

There’s still plenty of summer left, which means it’s likely you may be going on vacation before it’s over. One of the most difficult things about going on trips is knowing what to pack and how to organize these items in your bags to minimize luggage. There are ways to make sure you have everything you need while still being able to fit everything in as little space as possible.

Pack the essentials

You may want to be prepared, but packing a winter jacket for a tropical getaway is not effective. Do some research on the weather of where you are going and pack from there. Pack only what you know you will need. If nights are chilly, be sure to bring a sweater, sweatshirt, or light jacket. Avoid packing 10 outfits if you will be away for a week. Check to see if the place you are staying has washer and dryer machines so that you can wear outfits a second time. This will help reduce the number of clothes you need to pack and keep your luggage neat and organized.

Make a physical list

When you are thinking of what to pack, make a physical list of the specific items you are bringing. Not only will this help you stick to your plan and reduce how much you have, but it will also help you keep track of your stuff when you are packing up to come home. This way, you will avoid leaving things behind and losing items that are valuable to you.

Space hacks

One packing hack to help save space is rolling clothes. Rolling it tightly will help you pack as much as possible without taking up too much space. Also, if you are packing different shoes for the vacation, consider stuffing smaller items such as socks and intimates in your shoes to help maximize space, especially since shoes tend to be bulky. Be sure to put a plastic bag around your shoes so that any loose dirt does not get on your clothes.

Pack copies

You may be bringing important documents with you such as a passport, photo ID, or credit cards. These items are tedious to get back or replaced, so make copies before you go on vacation and put them in a different place than the originals. These documents and items are crucial and losing them can be devastating, so be sure you have copies and a plan if they were to be lost or stolen.

Careful with cash

If you are bringing a large amount of cash with you for your trip, avoid carrying it all in one place. Have the cash in different bags and compartments so if you lose some of it, you will not be losing all of the cash you had. Be sure you remember where it is, and if you make a list, be sure you are careful with it so no one tries to steal the cash.

Beauty items and cosmetics

Cosmetics can be bulky, especially if you have a lot. Put cosmetics such as face wash, concealer, liquid foundation, and other similar products in contact lens containers to limit the need for large bottles, especially since you will only be away for a short time. Purchase a travel roll-up bag for items such as makeup, brushes, shampoo, toothpaste, and more. Use pill boxes to store jewelry items like necklaces, earrings, and rings. Put cling wrap on cosmetics such as shampoo, conditioner, and lotions that have screw tops.

Airplane travel hacks

Traveling by airplane can be a bit trickier than traveling by car as you have to pay for luggage and are limited to weight. Buy a suitcase scale so you know how much your luggage weighs and adjust your suitcase packing accordingly. Either wear or pack heavier shoes like your shoes or jackets in your carry-on in order to save space in your luggage. Bring a backpack or large purse for things like books, a tablet, and other things you need for the plane so you do not have to worry about getting these items down from the overhead storage. Pack an extra outfit in your carry-on in case your luggage gets lost.

Clothing hacks

Pack clothing items that are designed to be layered. These items tend to be more lightweight, which will help save you space and weight. Bring clothing items that you can mix and match in order to make multiple outfits using the same clothes, especially if you have access to a washer and dryer on your trip. Bring a jacket that looks good with any outfit so you can limit the number of bulky jackets you need to bring along. Again, if the weather is warm, you may be able to get away with not packing a jacket at all.

Packing for a trip can be difficult, especially if you are tempted to pack everything. Knowing what to pack and how to pack can help you
