7 Cozy Winter Decorating Ideas

By Ashley Paskill on December 7, 2021

Winter is fast approaching. This means it will be getting colder and the holidays will be coming up quickly as well. This also means that you will want to change up your décor to fit the season, whether you want to change it to match the holidays or just have a general winter theme. No matter what you decide on, there are plenty of options out there for you to choose from so that you (and your roommates) can be cozy as you prepare for all the winter has in store.

Nature theme

Although it may be cold out in winter, nature still has a beauty that can only be seen this time of year. Hanging wreaths, holly, or tree branches, especially if they have an illusion of snow on them, can help bring out the beauty and magic of this season. Sticking with these instead of a Christmas tree can help keep your décor more winter-themed, especially if you and your roommates celebrate different winter holidays. You may even decide to commission artwork from a friend of a winter scene for something unique.

Blankets

If you live somewhere that tends to be really cold in the winter, using blankets to decorate can also have a practical element. You can use these blankets to keep warm as the weather gets chilly. See if your campus bookstore or an online vendor carries blankets of your school logo to show your school spirit. If you know someone who is able to make blankets, commission them to make one and display it. This can help support their small business and will give you a unique décor item. Blankets can be used to decorate a bedroom or a living room and can be used even after the holidays are over.

Candles

Candles are a common way to decorate in the winter. If you live in a dorm and are not allowed to use real flames, get battery-operated candles to add a similar effect as real candles. If you do opt for real wax candles to light, there are candles that come in winter scents. Check with your roommates to see what they like in terms of scents and buy one you can all agree on. They may not be a great source of heat, but they can add a sense of coziness and relaxation, especially as the fall semester ends and final exams and projects add stress to an already busy time of year.

Floor mats

With cold weather comes snow, ice, and slush. These can wreak havoc on your floors, which is not great if you are renting your home or apartment. Protect your floors with a floor mat that you have at your main door. You can buy ones for the holidays or just winter-themed ones. There are plenty of designs to choose from, so you can swap them out between uses and cleanings. Floor mats keep the yucky outdoor stuff in one place to protect your floors and in one easy-to-clean place.

Keurig machine

While Keurigs are not typically thought of as decorative items, they definitely can be. They come in a variety of colors and styles to match your kitchen’s theme. Not only that, but they help ensure that you can have your favorite warm beverage without making a whole pot of coffee or tea if you only want one cup. They even sell hot chocolate k-cups, so you can still have a Keurig if you are not a fan of drinking coffee or tea. This also allows any guests you have over for the holidays to be able to choose what kind of beverage they would like.

String Lights

No matter which winter holiday you celebrate, lights are an important part of the season. Add some string lights to your bedroom or common areas to add a cozy vibe to your space. There are several kinds of lights you can add, from different colors to plain white. You can even hang them in different ways, either around your mirror, along the edge of your ceiling, or multiple strings draped from the ceiling. Decide how you would like your space to look and what works for your space to determine how to best use string lights. You may even opt to make a winter scene in a mason jar and illuminate it with battery-operated string lights.

Throw pillows

Like blankets, throw pillows are both decorative and practical. They come in many shapes, sizes, and styles and can be used in a bedroom or a living room. Not only are they great decorative pieces, but they can be useful if you put them on a couch or chair in your living room. They make the seating area more comfortable for your guests, especially those who may have back issues who need a little extra comfort and support. You can even find pillows for winter and the winter holidays if you would like to decorate your space for the season specifically.

Winter can be a tough season since it can be cold and snowy, but your house or apartment can be cozy with the décor you choose.
