Jacksonville Jaguars Cut Tim Tebow

By Liam Wirsansky on August 23, 2021

The Tebow mania finally comes to an end. After an offseason of the national spotlight being on the Jacksonville Jaguars with a slew of sweeping changes and hires within the organization, one of the bulbs shining brightest in generating media attention may have finally extinguished, as TE Tim Tebow was cut following their first preseason game. The renowned college football player caused a national uproar, with his first return to the NFL since 2014, reuniting with his old college Head Coach, Urban Meyer, as well as finally making the highly sought after and anticipated transition from the QB position to TE. With no shortage of storylines to follow, fans were thrilled to see the player back in pads and a uniform, a uniform which claimed to be the highest selling jersey for the Jaguars this offseason, and even ascended to being the top selling jersey on NFL’s online shop only hours after the news broke that he was signed by the team.

A Jacksonville native and homegrown talent from Nease High School, Tebow is beloved by many in the area, so many were surprised, shocked, and even angered that he was cut and did not make the final roster. Fans arrived in Jacksonville from all over to watch and see if Tebow would make any training camp highlight, just delighted to see him playing football once again. Tebow arrived to the offseason program in great shape and impressed observers with a few solid days of practice early in training camp. Unfortunately, his performance did not continue in a positive trend once the pads went on and he struggled to gain any traction or consistency. Worst of all, he was a non-factor in the Jags’ Week 1 preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns and  was even on the butt end of a viral video on what many are calling a completely whiffed block, which can be seen here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V4hdqRsLYfY

Despite league wide doubts, Meyer gave the former 2010 first-round selection the opportunity to make the difficult transition to tight end before ultimately deciding to pull the plug on the whole experiment. Tebow was officially released when the Jaguars were required to trim their roster total from 90 players to 85. When interview, Meyer acknowledged that making the final roster was always going to be an uphill battle for him, pointing specifically to his inability to contribute to special teams being a major factor in the Jaguars’ decision to cut him. While many are probably wondering about what might be next for the national icon, they need look no further than at his new endorsement deal with the company Clean Juice, which has a restaurant in Ponte Vedra. Tebow likely has plans beyond sports now that his NFL career is likely finally over. Sponsoring companies and taking a break from it all does not sound like a bad way to recalibrate and plan out the next section of his career. Hopefully we will all see what is next for Tim Tebow soon enough.
