Juggling Your Coursework And Nannying Responsibilities

By Danielle Wirsansky on September 2, 2021

Enrolling in college, attending classes, completing the homework, and making it through exams is already tough enough. But when you work and do school, things can be even tougher. Many college students choose to nanny as their working gig during college for many reasons, including flexible hours that can work around your course schedule.

However, even with this flexibility,  juggling your coursework and your nannying responsibilities can be a lot. Being a nanny is an important position—you literally have a child’s (or even sometimes multiple children’s) life in your hands. You can’t afford to be unfocused or to make a mistake, with nannying or with school. Read on for some strategies to help you with juggling your coursework and nannying responsibilities at the same time!

Stay Organized

One of the best strategies for any situation that you are juggling lots of different things and situations is to stay organized. Stay organized can look different for different people, so you may know already what organizational strategies work best for you. If you are not quite sure, you may have to test out a couple of different strategies until you figure out what works best for you. Once you do, you can bet that staying organized was one of the best decisions you could have made.

For many people, having a planner can be a really great way to stay organized. Writing down what you need to do and when (as well as other important accompanying information) helps keep track of all the different threads of your life. Appointments, deadlines, variations to your schedule—those are all things you do not want to miss. If a planner does not work for you, you can create a google calendar or something similar to help you stay on track.

Plan Ahead

Another great strategy to help you juggle your coursework and nannying responsibilities is to plan ahead. For school, you want to know what your assignments and projects are and plan ahead when you want to get your work done. That way, you help yourself ensure that you actually will get it done. You do not want to fall behind in your coursework or stress yourself because you did not use your time wisely and plan ahead.

When you are a nanny, it is easy to get sucked into whatever you and your charge are doing and lose track of time. Time can fly by, especially when you’re with children and engaged like you should be. You do not want to have your charge miss an appointment or activity, forget to complete an assignment or even go to bed past their bedtime.

Planning ahead what you want to do and when will really help you in both regards. This can be a part of staying organized and keeping a planner. Beyond just knowing that there are things you have to get done, set aside and schedule time to do those things and plan ahead so that you can keep your head afloat.

Stay on Schedule

Something else that is equally difficult when you are juggling coursework and your nannying responsibilities is staying on schedule. It is great to plan ahead, but if you cannot stick to your guns and get everything done when you had scheduled to do so or get where you need to on time, all your planning will be moot.

Both coursework and nannying have a tendency to suck you into what you are doing and cause you to lose track of the time, but that just will not do. There are many ways to help you stay on schedule. One is creating a consistent schedule and falling into a routine. This will naturally help you to stay on schedule. If you need more assistance to stay on track though, you might try setting alarms on your phone or another device. This will help make you more aware of time passing and nudge you when you need to stop working on one assignment and move to another or help you remember you need to leave (and on time) for your charge’s appointment or activity.

You can also prepare things you need ahead of time, like packing lunches or dance bags or your own school bag so that when you realize it is time to go, you do not waste valuable time doing it then and end up being late or even just stressed and frazzled. Help you help yourself in school and with nannying by finding ways that work for you to keep yourself and your charges on a tight schedule.
