J’s Asian Street Food in Tallahassee Restaurant Review
J’s Asian Street Food is a rather new restaurant in Tallahassee located near the heart of Downtown on E. Tennessee Street across the road from Backwoods Bistro. Suitable for families with children of all ages, J’s is a compact appearing establishment, which rings heavily true for their parking situation. However, the restaurant is much more spacious and warmer as the customer approaches and enters the building. With outdoor seating also available, the charm of the environment and friendly hosting staff invited the customers to eat inside during my visit along with the rigid Florida summer heat. Well priced and very accommodating, J’s serves to be an excellent location for a lunchtime meeting or date.
With a water pitcher provided for the table in the beginning, the restaurant understands the needs and wants of a parched customer, who maybe needs to spend time exploring the wide-ranging options on the menu before ordering their meal. True to their name, the options did not disappoint with unique options, such as their “J’s Bao”, which are thick fluffy homemade buns filled with cilantro, cucumber, carrots, and the protein of your choice, or more conventional options, like General Tso’s Chicken. While still incredibly delicious and savory, the bao is unconventional in the sense that it is shaped and utilized more like a taco shell then an actual dumpling-like container. The dough of the bao was made to the perfect level of thickness that made the of the experience of chewing so much more enjoyable. With an option for a larger Dinner Combination for 3$ more, I elected to try the Bento Box, which came with enough food to still split in half for a second meal of leftovers, including the protein of your choice, rice, lo mein, and two cheese wontons.
The restaurant also features a relatively spacious and open floor plan in terms of the seating, which makes locating the bathroom facilities much easier, as it sits in the center of everything. The bathrooms proved to be very well maintained and cleaned with a ambience to feel comfortable enough to take care of the business afoot.
Quick and simple payment, with a recommended tip amount at the bottom of the receipt was also an appreciated aspect of my experience, as our waitress was attentive and up to the task, even offering to fulfill requests that we would want to make before we could even ask. A take home doggy bag meal was still nearly as delicious a day later after being reheated in a microwave, which should tell you all that you need to know about the high quality of this cooking by the chefs at J’s.
Overall, I would give J’s Asian Street Food a 4.5/5 star rating simply because of the tight parking experience that I and many others around me had. This restaurant boasts some of the most distinctive menu options in town for the Asian genre of food at prices that will not make you break the bank. I would highly recommend trying it out for a lunchtime meal at your earliest convenience.
