Businesses Organize Juneteenth Event in Railroad Square
With Juneteenth quickly approaching, many individuals and organizations around the country have begun arranging commemorative events and festivities, as a new wave and trend of black empowerment has revitalized and given the holiday new life in recent years. In Tallahassee local businesses have prepared a special celebration in Railroad Square to honor Juneteenth on this upcoming Friday, June 19th. Juneteenth signifies the timing of the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery in the U.S. as word of its announcement finally made its way into the south.
From 12pm-7pm in Railroad Square, Halisi Africa in collaboration with FAMU’s Essential Theatre Union with a special thanks to their in house playwright Jessica Posey, White Mouse Productions, Mickey Faust, Feeling Art, and The Ascend Institute, will be hosting an event entitled “Joyteenth Festival” to memorialize and rejoice in the progress and meaning that the holiday symbolizes. The festivities will include free food, drinks and entertainment performed by local black artists in a showcase of talent and artistry that includes live music, monologues, spoken word, dancing and singing all in the concurrent theme of joy!
Guests are invited to walk around and meet with lifestyle vendors who will be on hand to help people improve their mental health, spirituality, and physical being with yoga, zumba, meditation, financial advice, therapy, gardening, nature-based spirituality and more!
The organizers of the event are encouraging attendees to follow current CDC guidelines for face masks and to practice social distancing to protect one another against coronavirus. It is also recommended that guests bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.
Admission to the event is free and open to the public by registering through EventBrite. This event will be held outside in the “drum circle” of the square. Limited seating is available, so make sure to secure your reservations, as well as to come out early and in time to enjoy the free food, while supplies last.
