The Best Time of Year to Visit the Netherlands: Spring

By Marina Krivonossova on May 3, 2021

With COVID-19 vaccine rollouts increasing worldwide, it’s safe to say that many of us are hopeful that travel will be back to normal within the next year or so. And once it’s possible to travel abroad again, we’ll need to come up with a list of places to go! I know that summer and winter vacations are all the rage, but keeping those in mind, you can’t forget how beautiful of a season spring is. And you know where springtime is exceptionally amazing? That’s right, the wonderful country of the Netherlands!

Once the winter rain (and occasional snow) passes, the Netherlands transforms from a dreary, quiet country, to one of gorgeous, flowery landscapes that are an absolute must-see for locals and tourists alike. Keep reading to see why spending springtime in the Netherlands is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Springtime means flowers — and I mean lots of them. The most popular tourist destination when it comes to Dutch flower fields is called the Keukenhof. Located in the lovely city of Lisse, just 20 kilometers southwest of Amsterdam, the Keukenhof is a 79-acre park filled with hyacinths, tulips, and other gorgeous flowers. The park has indoor and outdoor exhibits, as well as several spots to grab a Dutch-themed bite (like a stroopwafel!) If you find yourself in the Netherlands during springtime, this is certainly a spot you won’t want to miss.

However, I know not everybody is a huge fan of visiting crowded tourist destinations. Standing in line to take an aesthetic photo for your Instagram or waiting half an hour to buy a bottle of water isn’t everybody’s idea of a perfect time. Fortunately, there’s plenty of less frequented places in Lisse to see the Dutch flower fields. And the best part is that you don’t even have to pay for entry to visit them! You can easily find a flower route that’s suitable for you based on your own personal preferences (i.e. route length, route beginning, etc.) Then, you can either grab your bike or put on your best walking shoes, and get started on your Dutch springtime adventure! If flower fields aren’t enough to convince you that springtime in the Netherlands is the absolute best, then I’m sure you’ll be persuaded when you hear more about Dutch weather. As opposed to dreary Dutch winters, cold autumns, and uncertain summers, springtime is one of the best seasons temperature-wise to visit the Netherlands. Some years are hotter than others, of course, but springtime is a rather consistently comfortable time to be in the Netherlands. If you’re looking to fill your Netherlands vacation with city trips, museum tours, and flower field adventures, you’ll certainly find yourself pleased with the Dutch springtime weather.

But, if making it to the Netherlands during the spring months isn’t something you can arrange, don’t be distraught. This country is still worth the visit any time of the year whenever you can make it happen. Happy travels, and I hope you get the opportunity to see for yourself why springtime in the Netherlands is so wonderful!
