Best Educational TV Shows Your Babysitter Can Watch With Your Kids

By Victoria Robertson on February 23, 2021

Keeping kids entertained all day long is a job in and of itself, so when you’re looking for babysitters, there’s a high chance that television is going to play into your plans. That being said, it can be challenging to limit the content to only educational television shows, as there is such a wide array of content available nowadays.

With that being said, this list of educational TV shows is acceptable for babysitters to watch with your kids, keeping them entertained and well-behaved, regardless of the time of day.

1. Sesame Street

The show that has been on since 1969, no joke, is still on for a reason. It features iconic characters, catchy and educational songs, and commentary on today’s society that is as important as it is educational for your children.

This show is available (and airs) on PBS, though can also be streamed through HBO Max and Youtube TV. So simply have your babysitter set the kids up in front of the TV and let Big Bird and Elmo do the rest.

2. Blues Clues & You

Remember the iconic partnering of Blue and Steve? Or perhaps Blue and Joe? Well, Blue is back with a new host, yet again, and is giving your children the entertainment (and education) you’ve been looking for!

Airing on Sling TV, Blues Clues & You features Josh and Blue as they solve puzzles and problems by following clues laid by Blue herself. You and your babysitter may even find yourselves singing the catchy tunes on your own from time to time!

3. Bubble Guppies

Airing on CBS, Bubble Guppies is a show about an underwater preschool classroom and its students, all of which are undersea creatures, which will pique your children’s interest. Meant for younger children, this show teaches elements of science, math, and literacy in an entertaining and engaging way, ensuring your children actually want to spend their time learning these subjects.

Airing back in 2011, the show has featured five seasons (and has since been canceled), though there is plenty of content out there for your children and their babysitter to catch up on in the meantime. So not to worry – there’s still plenty of Bubble Guppies out there worth watching!

4. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

If you rely on Disney Plus more often than you’d like to admit, you’re likely familiar with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, which is an educational show featuring Mickey Mouse and the gang.

Brought to you by Disney, obviously, this show features a lot of educational content designed for kids that love the mouse himself. Plus, your babysitter can set up the kids in front of the TV for as long as they need to, as the content streams from one episode to the next without commercial breaks, so you’ll have their undivided attention.

5. If I Were an Animal

If your kids are more into animals than anything else, the Netflix show, If I Were an Animal, is educational and teaches kids about the animals that are out there in the world. And they don’t just focus on one stage in the animal’s life – instead, they explore every stage of the animals’ lives.

The only downside to this show is that only one season has aired so far, which means that there isn’t a ton of content readily available, yet. However, you’ll still note that your babysitter and your kids are endlessly entertained, and everyone will walk away with new information.

6. Brainchild

Last, but certainly not least, Brainchild is a show that also streams on Netflix and is educational, though meant for all ages. That being said, it’s possible that you’ll need to go through and vet episodes, as some may not be age-appropriate given the wide audience.

This show is science-based and explains the world we live in to a younger audience, so it could be thought of as a modern Bill Nye the Science Guy (which is also a stream-able option, by the way). Either way, so long as the episodes are parent-approved, there’s only one season so far, which gives your kids plenty of educational content without overloading them at one time.

Television isn’t always the negative entity it’s made out to be. In fact, with kids especially, TV can actually be educational, entertaining, and important to various aspects of a child’s development.

That being said, there is a whole world of content out there that doesn’t meet these criteria, so weeding through the “junk” TV to find educational shows can be a challenge. These six shows are not only educational but are also well rated and appreciated by parents and children alike.

So when it comes time to give your babysitter some shows to rely on while watching your kids, you can feel that everyone is in good hands with these recommendations.
