Jacksonville Jaguars Lose Their 12th Straight Game
The Jacksonville Jaguars continued their historically putrid play, skidding to their franchise record 12th straight loss on Sunday, which was a game to forget on all accounts. Whether it was the blocked field goal or another benched quarterback on the season, not even the return of Minshew Mania late in the third quarter could give the Jaguars more than a single touchdown drive spark after the team was already losing 31-3 and the game had all but ended before the fourth quarter had even begun. While most Jaguar fans have already been looking ahead towards the 2021 NFL Draft and hoping that the Jaguars continue to lose games to secure a high draft position, the competitive play with starting QB Mike Glennon at the helm the last few weeks gave those fans entertaining matches without the worry of the Jaguars actually winning that match. That all changed this past Sunday, as the Jaguars simply could not match the pace of the Tennessee Titans offense. RB Derrick Henry had a field day carving up the Jaguars defense, who gave up several highlight worthy plays to several notable Titans offensive players. Perhaps the most impressive coming from WR AJ Brown on a one handed 37-yard touchdown pass early in the first quarter.
Like most weeks on this Jaguars team, the lone bright spot of the team was the play of undrafted RB James Robinson, who continues to impress and break records in his rookie season. Playing like a true seasoned veteran, Robinson finished the day with 67 yards rushing, eclipsing the 1,000 yard mark on the season, becoming the fourth undrafted free agent running back in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards or more in their rookie season. Robinson has now also gained the most scrimmage yards by an undrafted rookie since 1967, passing Indianapolis Colts running back Dominic Rhodes who had 1,328 scrimmage yards his rookie season. Behind a depleted line on Sunday, missing C Brandon Linder and G Andrew Norwell, Robinson struggled to get momentum in the beginning of the game, but continued to breakthrough, as penalties against teammates negated several important runs, including a TD run on QB Gardner Minshew’s first drive in the game. Now the league’s third leading rusher, James Robinson has earned the respect he deserves around the league. Robinson continues to be the most valuable player for the team and the decision to start him this season remains the best made by HC Doug Marrone on the season.
Seeing game action for the first time since the Jaguars’ week 7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, QB Gardner Minshew looks to build off of his subpar fourth quarter return, where he completed 18 of 31 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown, next week against the Baltimore Ravens after Jaguars HC Doug Marrone announced that Minshew would be in the starting lineup. At a 1-12 overall record, it is very unclear as to who will remain on the roster and employed on the Jaguars team next season, and while there are rumors swirling that Owner Shad Khan intends to retain HC Doug Marrone next season, it is clear that with the current General Manager vacancy the team will look drastically different. A game against the familiar faces of Baltimore Ravens’ DE Calais Campbell and DE Yannick Ngakoue should provide for some thrilling in game action, as the Jacksonville Jaguars seek to end their losing streak and win their second game of the season.
