4 Things to Organize As The World Becomes More Chaotic

By Madison White on July 15, 2020

When the world around us seems so chaotic, it is only natural to want to organize and control the things you actually do have control over. You may not be able to save the world right now, but you can make yourself feel a little more at ease by making the space around you tidier and more suited to your needs. Let’s take a closer look at some areas in your home that may need some extra love right now and may help you feel a little bit better about the space around you.

1. Spices

Spices are something that can become disorganized so quickly. While cooking or baking, you’re likely pulling things out, moving them around, and shoving them back in without too much thought. Because of this, your spice cabinet may be a cluttered mess and may be preventing you from cooking because you avoid looking at it.

Organizing your spice cabinet will be made much easier by simply making your spices easy to find. This can be done by buying special organizers, using risers and stands, or a lazy Susan so that you can spin them all around until you find the one you are looking for. Organizing your spice cabinet is also a great opportunity to rediscover some spices that you haven’t seen in awhile or consolidate if you have multiples of the same thing.

2. Pantry, Refrigerator, and Freezer

Much like your spice cabinet, your pantry is something that can be easily disheveled. Because many of us aren’t eating out as much, your pantry is likely much fuller than it has been in the past. This is a great thing, but it might lead to some stress about the state of its organization.

Taking a deep clean through your pantry, alongside your refrigerator and freezer, are important for getting rid of things you don’t need and creating less clutter. A few months ago, you may have bought some things that you thought you’d use and then you forgot about them. On one hand, you might find something that will reignite and inspire you to cook something new! On the other hand, you may find something and wonder what you were thinking when you bought it. Now is the time to get rid of those things you don’t want! You should definitely get rid of anything that is rotting or past its expiration date. You may also want to get rid of half-used packages or things or transfer them into something more usable. If you find food that is still good, but that you don’t think you’ll use, try donating it to a local food bank or offering it to friends and family members.

3. Closet

If you missed the Marie Kondo phase, now is the time to go through that overstuffed closet of yours. Many of our wardrobe needs have probably changed in the past few months, so it is a good idea to reconsider the items within your closet that you love or don’t love. One thing that organizer extraordinaire Marie Kondo suggests is piling all your clothes together and going through them one by one. This way, you aren’t missing anything that has been shoved to the back of the closet. It also allows you to think critically about how much you use and like each piece and forces you to see the (usually large) pile of clothes that you already have.

While you may be living in sweatpants and athleisure right now, don’t forget that things will—hopefully—not always be this way. Sure, you may not need your office blazers or your going-out attire right now, but the day may come again when you want them. That being said, you might begin to realize that you only need a few formal dresses rather than a whole closet full.

4. Junk Drawers

When we find something weird in our house that we don’t quite know what to do with, we usually shove it in a junk drawer somewhere and forget about it. This works well for a while, but then your junk drawer starts overflowing. You begin to wonder what you did with that one odd object and have to dig through many others to find it. A junk drawer can be overwhelming, but looking through it can be really beneficial. You can get rid of the random stuff you don’t think you’ll ever need and start to make sections and places for the things you want to keep. They’ll be much easier to find this way!

It is easy to feel helpless when turning on the news or reading the latest on social media. For some personal relief, organizing and taking care of the space around you can make a huge difference.
