LGBTQ/Underrepresented Musicians to Check Out Now

By Victoria Robertson on January 8, 2020

The world of music is a vast one, which is why a lot of artists go unnoticed in such a landscape. That being said, LGBTQ artists go even more unnoticed in popular platforms, which is problematic.

While there are plenty of famous, talented musicians out there that go unnoticed, these six are a great starting point if you’re looking for unique, fun and new music in the LGBTQ space.

Basically, if you haven’t heard of these six individuals, you should certainly take note of their names, because they’re going to be artists that you’ll need in your life!

1. Emily Burns

This English pop musician hit her stride in 2018 with the release of two albums. That being said, in 2019, some music videos for popular songs, “Is It Just Me?” and “My Town” also hit VEVO, bringing in some new looks at her music.

The major “love anthems” from Burns include “Test Drive,” “Girlfriend at the Time” and “Cheat.” If you’re a fan of pop music and LGBTQ bops, this is an artist you’ll want to familiarize yourself with.

2. King Princess

You may recognize this name from the musician’s recent SNL appearance, but King Princess is only just getting started. Her first song to critical acclaim, “1950,” is a specific tribute to the LGBTQ community and, more specifically, queer love, which undoubtedly made an impact on the music industry.

Since then, this talented artist’s abilities are only going to become more public and enhance King Princess’ fame and reach. Plus, this Brooklyn native was signed by Mark Ronson’s label, so you should only expect to hear more about her.

3. Leland

Leland is unique in that he spans multiple genres, including pop, country, and R&B, which is quite a feat. Originally, Leland worked as a songwriter, writing massive hits for Selena Gomez, Betty Who, and Troye Sivan, to name a few.

In terms of his singing abilities, Leland’s new anthems, “Run Into You,” “Middle of a Heartbreak” and “Mattress,” are all well worth the listen. And, because he spans across many genres, individuals that are fans of all types of music will enjoy the music that he puts out there.

We’re lucky he’s moved from songwriting to singing, and it’s only a matter of time before Leland is a household name.

4. Bronze Avery

Born in Orlando, Florida, this pop singer-songwriter released his first EP back in 2015. Still, he released another EP in 2019 and is moving back into the limelight, this time for good.

And, just in case my word’s not enough for you, this up-and-coming artist has released some major “bops” in the past few years, including “Leave Together,” Secrets” and “Pressure.” However, you may have also heard of him from his cover of the famous Rick Astley hit, “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

Basically, if you’re a pop fan and interested in hearing some new, unique and, ultimately, fun bops, you’ll want to stick around and listen to this guy!

5. Merlot

You may have heard of Merlot as the “soulful” singer that this generation needs and that assessment would certainly be accurate. Merlot has been around for years, specifically in NYC, establishing themselves as a model with their “signature freckles” and “femme lewks.”

With a history of R&B tracks and a sultry undertone, songs such as “Bad For You,” have grown to win over music fans, regardless of their genre preferences. People love the nostalgia of a truly beautiful, soulful voice, and Merlot offers just that.

And who knows? This soul singer just might work their way into your soul.

6. Chelcee Grimes

Another British singer-songwriter to wrap up the list, Chelcee Grimes was dropped from her original label at 19 years old, but is back and better than ever. Now 27, this pop artist has moved from songwriting for Kesha and Dua Lipa to debuting her own single, “Just Like That.”

According to multiple sources, this bop is an “earworm of epic proportions,”  meaning you’ll hear it once and will return to listen to it, again and again. So if you’re looking for another pop artist to blow you away, you’ll certainly have that with Chelcee Grimes, just watch.

Again, there are plenty of LGBTQ artists out there, many of them popular, but many of them unpopular as well. However, that isn’t to say that it will change down the road. For this reason, it’s important to take a look at some of the artists available out there now, and enjoy their music the way that it should be!

Popularity is underrated in today’s society, which is why the unique, less popular and up-and-coming artists are ones that you should be keeping an eye out for! Enjoy these six artists, and continue exploring the others that are out there for your enjoyment!
