What I'll Miss Most at School

By Josh Baker on July 28, 2019

Being home over summer break has been very relaxing. It took me a couple of weeks to get back into the groove of being home and away from the deadlines of college life. It was both a physical and psychological transition, and as the time to return to school draws closer, I begin the top five things I will miss most about home.

  1. Having my own room; I grew up having my own room, so when I started sharing the room with somebody, it was a big adjustment. It also did not help that my first roommate was a huge jerk (fortunately he was replaced by someone infinitely nicer in November). It is very nice to know that when I go into my own room and shut the door no one else can really come in unless they knock and I say “come on in.” Having your own room just brings some sort of peace of mind and gives you a sanctuary.

  2. Having access to my own car; A car equals freedom. Although school kept me pretty busy, and even if I did have a car, I do not know if I would have had the time to go anywhere, it is just nice to know that I can grab my keys and go.

  3. Having access to my mother’s cooking; The key to a college cafeteria would probably have to be its variety of options. But when your mom is as good of a cook as mine, you do not need options. Whether it be homemade spaghetti and meatballs or fried chicken, any meal made with love is always delicious.

  4. Being able to see new movies as soon as they are released; I love going to the movies. And it did make me a little sad to miss some of the movies I really wanted to see while I was at school. I have seen quite a few movies over the summer already. It is more than just seeing a simple film, it is going with friends, seeing the coming attractions, the anticipation; the whole experience is exciting for me.

  5. The comfort of my family; hanging out with my family can sometimes drive you crazy, but I will always miss them whenever I am away for an extended period of time. It is comforting to know they are just a text, call, or a FaceTime away.

Even though the school year can be tough, there are some things that I am looking forward to once I get there.

  1. The independence, aka no one telling me to get off my phone (you can refer back to number five above about how sometimes your family can make you crazy).

  2. The opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. I look forward to having a new roommate this year and definitely putting myself out there and making new friends. The world is full of interesting people and I need to teach myself that the more people I meet the more enriched my life will be.
