Test Preparation – What Works and What Doesn’t

By Patrice Pilgrim on June 24, 2019

My life is busy – between my two young children, my husband and my studies at SNHU, I do not have a minute of time to waste. The reality of pursuing my degree in Creative Writing-English is that I am going to have to prepare for tests, even after the completion of my degree. How do I meet my personal responsibilities and succeed in my academic ones? The answer is simply complex! I utilize test preparation tricks that work for my lifestyle and I am going to share a few of them with you.

Laying out the work

For me, it helps to get my mind in the proper place – I lay out everything I need to study for that exam. It also helps that I am very meticulous about the type of notes that I take for my various courses. This process also involves organizing the topics that I will be tested on. I also have some type of note-taking implement on hand to ensure I can make notes from my study process.

Getting to a quiet point

As I said, I have two young children – boys. Getting a quiet minute to myself is key when I have assignments to complete and test preparation to engage in. I have a playlist of music that I listen to that helps me hone my focus. When this step isn’t enough, I get both boys to bed and get down to business.

Confidence in what you know

Before I began my studies at SNHU, I was very insecure about any written piece of work that I submitted. I never thought that my work was good enough. While I am not 100% cured of this, since the beginning of my studies, I am on the way to improving how I view the work that I do and the test preparations that I make.

What also helps, is that I have the support of friends and family. Sometimes, it’s the understanding of what I am trying to do and what it could mean for the future, that sees my family volunteering to watch the boys for me for a few hours, cook dinner, run errands or any of the myriad of tasks that I see to along with my personal business. However, it’s done, test preparation is going to be key as you complete studies here at SNHU and even beyond these ‘walls’.
