When you are in college, space is scarce. Whether you are in a teeny tiny dorm room with three other people or in a small, off-campus apartment you can barely afford, a lack of space is a hallmark of the college experience. Why is your closet so small? Why is your dresser so teeny? How can so many beds and desks fit in one room? How will all these teenagers and young adults be able to coexist peacefully in such a small space? Who thought it was okay to have so many people living and breathing in one small room without any space between you?

Take a moment. Breathe. Let your lungs fill up. Do not worry—there is room for that at least.

One of the best ways that you can de-stress about your small amount of space while at college is to maximize the space that you do have. And the best, most universal space that you can focus on maximizing is your closet! Almost everyone has one (and if your dorm does not provide you a closet, it at least should be providing you with a wardrobe, which is also a kind of closet).

Read on to learn the best ways to maximize your closet storage space while in college!

Extra Levels

One thing that many people do not know is that you can change the height of the rods or shelving in your closet! If this is the case in your closet, you can shift the rods around in your closet to the right heights so that you can manage your own wardrobe as efficiently as possible. You can also lower the rod or shelf that you have in your closet so that you can add extra rods or shelving.

What is the benefit of this? Double the amount of rod to hang or fold your clothes on! You are basically giving yourself a double-decker closet, and who can really complain about that? If you have more hanging clothes than folding clothes, give yourself another rod. If you have more folding clothes (and not enough dresser space to accommodate or you want to better utilize the unused closet space), then add an extra shelf.

You can buy or rent extra shelves or rods or even make your own to better fit your closet needs. Your closet is your most adaptable space, so use it well!

Racks

Another great way to maximize your closet storage space is to use racks! There are also sorts of different racks you could use that might help you. There are hat racks, shoe racks, tie racks, belt racks. Everyone is individual, so whatever accessory you wear or have the most of is probably going to be the rack that helps you out the most.

Usually, shoe racks are the most commonly helpful rack you can use though! Most people have several pairs of shoes, so keeping them tidy and organized can be helpful. Since you have very little space in your dorm or apartment (as well as having roommates) you probably cannot just leave your shoes sprawled on the floor willy-nilly. And it is a waste of space to just line them up, right? Using racks will help you maximize your space.

You can put the rack on the inside of the closet door or put a rack at the base of your closet. You can even get a hanging rack for your shoes that you can hang from the rod, if you have enough space to spare for that too.

Vertical Hangers

Another awesome space saver to help you maximize your closet storage is using vertical hangers! Vertical hangers allow you to hang many articles of clothing from a sing hanger and they use up the vertical rather than horizontal space of the closet. You can get these kinds of hangers for all sorts of different kinds of clothing, from ties to camis, and you can even hang your regularly hung clothes from them too, though you will want to be careful not to put too much weight on a single hanger so you do not accidentally break it.

You can get all different kinds, in different colors, designs, and even material so you can find the kind that works best for you. Metal ones are often the most expensive but this is usually because they are the most durable and can bear the most weight.

Try out different combinations of the space-saving tips until you find what works for you! No one strategy will be best because we all have different belongings, dimensions (of your room or closet), and budgets. But do not be afraid to experiment and try to different ways of storing things until you can fit everything that you need to into your closet!
