2 Mindful Ways to Choose Your Major or Career Path

By Suad Othman on February 6, 2019

I heard an interesting quote once, “You do well and better in the things you want to do, than the things you have to do” – Unknown. This quote played a major (no pun intended) part in my decision to pursue writing as a career. It can be extremely difficult to stay true to what you believe is good for you and what others tell you is good for you regarding your future.

Navigating through that time in your life when you know you need a change can be a tricky process, so I’ve laid out some tips to help you on your journey. Below are some mindful ways to help you choose the right major or switch up your path in life. The tips I’ve written are things I’ve implemented in my own life which ultimately enabled me to write the article you’re reading now.

1. Listen to yourself. This is my number one tip for choosing your major or path. In the past, I’ve doubted my ability to listen to my gut. Listen to those passing thoughts in your mind reminding you what you think is interesting or what you picture your life to look like in the future. Those passing thoughts can help you create the framework for the life you truly want to live and (this is important) are willing to work towards.

If you want to know if you’re capable of something, your track record is a good place to start, but it’s not a good place to stop. Just because you didn’t succeed in what you thought you would love and/or excel at, doesn’t mean you can’t take those lessons and skills and apply them to your future endeavor. If your major or path isn’t what you thought it was going to be that’s okay! Knowing what you don’t want is a fundamental part of your growth as an adult and it can also help you home in on what you’re willing to do for the rest of your life, or a large portion of it.

2. A good place to start is by thinking about previous passions and interests. You know the ones that are long lost, but you think about from time to time? Well, I created a simple three-step solution by incorporating them to help you find the right major or path and make you money doing it. Step one, write out all your passions and your interests in separate columns. Step two, after creating a list of both, connect the ones that make sense. Step three, search for what career options line up with your passions and interests. You might be surprised at the jobs available today that align with the items in your list.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need the answers right now, in fact, you don’t need any of the answers. All you need to know is if you’re willing to work towards what you want and if you’re willing to dedicate the time needed to become the person you want to be. When you choose the path that was originally intended for you, everything will fall into place. It will seem easier, things will be a bit more seamless. I can’t promise it won’t be so much harder than what other people tell you you should be doing with your life, but I can promise it will be so much more meaningful and worthwhile when you follow your intuition.
