Travel New Year's Resolutions to Better Your 2019

2019 New Year’s resolutions are underway. Whether you’ve been on point with keeping true to your resolutions, or you’re having trouble, I have some great advice for you. Make your 2019 resolutions revolve around travel! Too many resolutions are focused around weight loss, fitness, and diet; and while there is nothing wrong with that, I feel like there is so much more. Like I said earlier, we are already a few weeks into 2019, but it’s never too late to set new resolutions that you think will enrich and better your life. There is so much more to travel resolutions than simply saying that you want to travel more: read on to find out what these resolutions are!

Effectively Organize your Travel Plans

More often than not, people have a hard time staying on top of their travels plans. Some people may be too last minute when it comes to booking their trip. Others might wait to pack until the night before or the day of. Travel is supposed to be fun, so why stress yourself out by not being prepared? Here are some ways to effectively organize your travel plans.

  • Book your trip (flights, hotels, etc.) at least a month or two in advance
  • Create a general itinerary (or a very specific itinerary) for your time on vacation
  • Budget your travel before your trip
  • Set up any necessary accommodations, like a babysitter, a few weeks before you leave
  • Write a packing list a week before your trip
  • Pack your bags 5-7 days before leaving
  • Run all necessary errands 5-7 days before leaving

Be More Spontaneous When Traveling

While some people have a hard time planning in advance for their travels, other people aren’t great about destressing and being more spontaneous when they travel. If you’re one of these people, you should try to incorporate some spontaneity into your travel plans. Instead of shying away from a last-minute weekend trip with your friends, embrace the chaos and just say “okay!” If you’re worried about spending a lot of money on a hotel, don’t book a hotel in advance and just do “Hotel Tonight.” If you’re feeling unsure about whether or not you want to go away for spring break, wait until a few weeks before to book a trip instead of a few months before.

Budget Your Travel More Effectively

Even though it’s nice to splurge a bit on travel, I bet most of us can attest to the fact that we can get overly excited to travel and accidentally spend too much. In order to avoid this phenomenon, it is a good idea to create a rough budget of what you’re going to need to spend money on while you’re traveling. Some expenses you will need to consider are:

  • Food and drink
  • Flights
  • Hotels/accommodations
  • Souvenirs
  • Transportation
  • Emergency

When traveling, always make sure you have cash on you, but don’t walk around with a ton of cash in your pocket. Leave some cash in a safe or lock box when you’re going out on the town, and bring some with you. It’s also smart to bring one credit card and one debit card.

Travel More OR Travel Less

I know I said at the beginning of the article that there is so much more to travel resolutions than simply saying that you want to travel more, but it is something to consider. However, if you already travel a lot, a great New Year’s resolution is to travel less. If you travel too much, you are probably spending too much money and maybe too much time away from work, family, and friends. However, if you don’t travel at all, you may be missing out on experience that will really change your life, and your overall outlook on the world, for the better. If you are on either end of this spectrum, you can try and create a more balanced and less aggressive travel schedule. Either way, this is a great opportunity for you to either explore new places, or try to find peace and comfort in your home town.

Take your New Year’s resolutions to a whole new level and turn your resolutions into travel resolutions. Even if none of the resolutions about work for you, a great travel New Year’s resolution is to create a bucket list of all of the places you want to travel to and all of the activities you want to do in these places. Start small and work your way up. It’s okay to revamp your New Year’s resolutions; take the long weekend and explore all of your travel options and jot down a list of travel resolutions that you might consider. I hope your 2019 is off to a great start, but if it’s not, take some time to think about measures you can take to better your 2019!
