One of the best parts of the holiday season is decorating your home, especially if you are doing it with friends and family. In this post, we’ll discuss fun ways to decorate your home for the holidays. With these tips, your home will be super festive in no time!

Hang up string lights, inside and outside

String lights are a hallmark of holiday decorations. Hanging up string lights will quickly make your place feel more festive and ready for the holidays. If you can, hang up some lights outside, too. Bonus points if the lights are fun colors! (Of course, be careful and practice common electrical safety when you do this. You don’t want to get electrocuted or to start a fire. Don’t leave the lights on all the time, remember to turn them off during the day.) String lights are a great way to decorate the interior and exterior of your place for the holidays.

Light some candles

Candles are another important part of the holidays. Having your home smell like the holidays will definitely get you into the holiday spirit. My personal favorite candle scents for the holidays are cinnamon, peppermint, gingerbread, or pine. Burning a candle of any of those scents while you are decorating will make your decorating experience more fun, and will make your home more festive.

Buy a cinnamon broom and keep it in the common area

If you do not like candles, you can still have your place smelling like the holidays by buying a cinnamon broom. It lasts a long time and has a wonderful holiday scent. (It also safer because it doesn’t involve burning something). Keep in the living room for an extra festive touch to your home!

Play music and movies

While you are decorating, I would recommend playing themed music or movies in the background. There are some fun Christmas playlists on YouTube and Spotify that you can jam out to as you decorate your place. Of course, there will also be Christmas movies playing on TV all the time; you can instead choose to have those playing in the background as you decorate. Playing festive music and movies will make decorating for the holidays more fun!

Hang up stockings

Stockings are a cute, festive decoration for the holidays. Even if you don’t have a fireplace, you can still put them up! Bonus points if you customize them for each roommate/member of the household and actually put little gifts inside them!

Put up and decorate the Christmas tree

The highlight of decorating for the holidays is putting up and decorating the centerpiece: the Christmas tree! Break out the tree and box of ornaments and start setting them up! (Personally, this is one of my favorite parts of decorating for the holidays.) This is an especially appropriate time to have the music or movies playing. Nothing will get you into the holiday spirit like putting up and decorating the Christmas tree!

Make a fun holiday card collage

You will probably get a couple of holiday cards from friends or family members over the next few weeks. Instead of keeping them on display for a few days and then stuffing them in a drawer, try to make a collage out of them. For example, you can use a bulletin board to display the cards you get. This way, they will become a piece of art, and not just something to hide away. You will be able to enjoy it for more than just a few days if you make a cute display out of it.

Make your own decorations

The holidays are a great time to make your own decorations! If you are crafty and into DIY projects, you can search through Pinterest to find cute decorations you can make yourself. Making your own decorations not only helps you exercise the creative part of your brain, but it will also put a special, personal touch on your decorations. (If you have extra time once you finish decorating, you can look up more DIYs to make your gifts, as handmade gifts can be much more special than store bought ones.) Making your decorations is a great way to get yourself in the holiday spirit!

Bake holiday-themed cookies (or other treats)

Part of the fun of the holidays is the food! Before you begin decorating, bake yourself some sweet holiday cookies. (The ones with little Christmas trees, snowmen, and reindeer on them are my personal favorite. I may or may not have already baked a batch of them!) If you bake some cookies, you can eat your yummy treats as you decorate your place for the holidays. Seeing the fun designs will put a smile on your face.

Decorating your home is a great way to put yourself in the holiday spirit! If you follow these tips, you will have a festive place in no time. Have a fun, happy, and safe holiday season!
