Paint the Walls a Similar Color to the Floor

If you are allowed to paint the walls of your apartment, try to match the wall color to the color of the floor. This will make your space feel bigger because the space where the wall and the floor meet won’t be as bold and noticeable. It will look like the floor goes on forever when it matches the wall color.

Use Light Colors

Decorate with light colors to make your space feel bigger. Your walls should be a light color, your floors should be a light color, and your furniture should be neutral or light. Monochromatic colors are easier to look at and are less distracting than bright, bold colors.

Of course, you can still have accent colors that pop up throughout the apartment. Maybe it’s a decorative pillow or a painting on the wall. When decorating with a monochromatic color scheme, your space will feel much bigger than it actually is.

Hang Up Mirrors

When you hang up mirrors in a small space, they will make the space feel bigger because the reflection makes it look as if there is another room or an extension of the room. This works best with a large rectangular mirror. However, there are many different styles of mirrors that will make your space feel bigger.

Pick a mirror with a light colored frame that matches the rest of your decorations. This will help it blend in to your apartment more.

Get the Right Furniture

Furniture can be tricky when decorating a small space. You may be under the impression that all of your furniture needs to be small and compact. That isn’t the case! When you put one large piece of furniture, like a couch, in a small room it can make your space feel bigger. Don’t clutter the room with a lot of furniture, though. Attention should only be drawn to that large piece of furniture.

It’s best to buy furniture that stands on legs rather than a skirted couch. Since the furniture is raised, it will make the room look less cluttered and feel more open.

Take Off the Doors

If you live by yourself and need to make your space feel bigger, try taking off the doors in your apartment. You’ll really only need the door for the bathroom. Doors can make a room feel very small, especially when they are closed. So, open up your apartment and allow yourself to look into another area of your apartment.

Limit the Artwork

Living in a small space means you don’t have a ton of wall space to hang up your favorite pieces of art or pictures. Rather than having a collection of little pictures or pieces of artwork, settle for one large piece that takes up a good amount of wall space. This will draw your eye to one part of the room, making it feel bigger than it actually is.

Go With Glass

Solid furniture can make your apartment feel very cluttered and small. Go with glass furniture to create the illusion that your apartment is spacious. Furniture that you can look through almost makes it look like it isn’t even there!

Along with furniture, go with doors that have glass windows in them rather than taking the door off altogether. You’ll still be able to look through into the next room, but you can still have some kind of privacy.

If your bathroom feels small, install a glass shower to make it feel bigger. Or, if you have a tub, put up a clear shower curtain with a simple design.

Make Your Space Feel Bigger

There are many ways to make your space feel bigger than it actually is. Whether you are painting the walls a lighter color to match the floor or arranging furniture made of glass or resting on legs, you can get creative to make your dream apartment. All of your guests will be amazed at how much bigger it feels from when you first moved in. Go to your local antique store or flea market to find the best decorations and furniture to make your space feel bigger.
