"Meet Me in the Bathroom" Named a Best Book of 2017

By Lorena Roberts on November 23, 2018

According to a recent press release, Lizzy Goodman’s “Meet Me in the Bathroom” has made the list of best books for 2017. A collection of almost 200 interviews by Goodman detail how New York City’s rock and roll scene re-branded itself during the years of 2001-2011.

In the early 2000s, the Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, the Moldy Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, and others seemed to disappear, as the September 11th terrorist attacks changed Americans across the country. Soon, New York City was reclaiming their rock-n-roll identity.  Franz Ferdinand, the Killers, and Kings of Leon emerged into the rock scene, using clubs in New York City as a base for launching music that would soon sell out arenas globally.

With the launch of iTunes, the music industry truly changed. The first decade of the twenty-first century in New York City was a time of rapid change for rock and roll. If you’re at all interested in music and culture, Goodman’s work is the perfect way to spend your downtime.

Goodman’s work has appeared in the New York Times, the New York Times MagazineRolling StoneSpinNylonElleInterviewOut and NME. She’s a regular contributor for the New York Times Magazine and even serves as an expert in her field when necessary for outlets like National Public Radio.

Praise for “Meet Me in the Bathroom”

“An evocative and gossipy oral history…Not only was Ms. Goodman there…but as our revelatory tour guide, she shrewdly jogged the memories of her protagonists…The result is an affectionate, idiosyncratic narrative of the rock scene’s erratic evolution.” — New York Times

“Lizzy Goodman has produced an instant classic…All the Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Ryan Adams gossip you’ve ever wanted to know is right here in this epic, loving look at a very different New York City.” — Rolling Stone

“[Meet Me in the Bathroom] will make any rock ‘n’ roll fan who came of age or lived in New York in the aughts…feel all sorts of warm and cozy nostalgic feelings.” — BuzzFeed
