The Advantages of Going to College Close to Home

By Andreas Fanos on October 15, 2018

It seems that many look at a list of accredited colleges and consider the ones that are the farthest from home as the best options — however, individuals really have to think about the situation. Is it really in my best interest to move away from friends and family? The answer can be pretty simple depending on a variety of factors and emotions.

The answer to that question in a way can be decided by what you feel in your heart. Do I love the place/state where I live in? Or do I wish to see something different and get away from the ordinary and boring atmosphere? Going away for college in a different state can be exhilarating and seem great at first, but students should check out the campus to see if they will truly like it first and see how it is. It can be tough to decipher from looking at pictures and snippets of videos online. It is not good to transfer to other colleges often as it will show on your record and be a hassle too.

It can also depend on knowing your major too. If a program in your major is much better at another college and one of the top around, it is a good idea to go to that school over another that isn’t as good.

Money definitely comes into play here because if it is far away, you will certainly need to pay for airfare to get there and back as college students are typically given an extended amount of time off, more than in high school. Prices for getting airplanes there and back can be pricey. It could also be a motivation to move and not go to school close to home because you will have plenty of time to come home for holidays, which can typically be a month or more of time off.

Another thing that needs to be considered is the possibility of getting homesick and not getting any home cooked meals! It will depend on the food and options at the school you attend, but the cafeteria can get boring and the food can be bad at some colleges. Going away to college far from home can mean no home-cooked meals and time to get away from it all. Some will want to stay close to home to have great meals from home and to relax as staying at college can get to be stressful. Sometimes going home to a familiar environment can be stress relieving and be like a breath of fresh air.

Everyone should be answering these questions when going away to college, especially if it is far from home. No one wants to make a mistake and have to battle it out for a semester before they can come back home and go to college close by. Going to school close by also means being close to family and friends and removing the possibility of not getting homesick. These are all the advantages of staying close to home for college.
